Decorating Ideas to Make Your Kitchen Homely

Designing a kitchen can be exciting and there are so many decorating ideas that you could try. Often the kitchen is a room in which most people spend a lot of their time. Whether it is to entertain friends and family or simply to cook the family meals, the kitchen really is the centerpiece in most homes. So, if you are thinking of decorating it, it would be a good idea to spend time researching and finding the right ideas to suit your home as well as your personality.

Finding the Right Kitchen Decorating Ideas to Suit You

There are many ways in which you can make your kitchen look homely and sophisticated or modern and relaxed. From choosing different tiles to rearranging the whole design, you should definitely be able to come up with something that suits your family needs as long as you do the right amount of research.

You can find various different designs in magazines as well as on the internet. The internet has a huge range of ideas to be found, though it might take you a long time to come up with one which you like, so ensure that you have quite a few hours to spare when you set off on your search!

Going to your local library might also be a good idea as an aid in your search. There you will find plenty of interior design books which will also offer ideas as to what you could go for. Usually even little steps can be taken to drastically improve the look of the kitchen – it doesn’t always have to be the big changes that make a difference! For example, if you have a table, a simple centerpiece on the table could add that extra touch that it was missing. A tablecloth could also be something different to try. Basically you need to use as much imagination as you can in order to let your personality shine through.

If you are looking to redecorate the whole kitchen then you will need paint or wallpaper as well as paintbrushes, tiles and accessories. You may want to think about moving the sink or boiler within your home but generally that can cost a lot of money and it is also a lot of hassle! So, avoid changing the whole layout around if possible. Of course you could always replace old looking cupboards and worktops with more modern designs if you want to, and you can replace an old looking cooker and appliances with newer ones and that should help to change the look of the kitchen.

Overall it is completely up to you as to how you want to design the kitchen. You need to ensure that you are happy with the designs and you also need to make sure that you have spent enough time researching and looking for new designs. Redecorating should never be a rushed job otherwise it may turn out all wrong!

Sunroom Porch Designs - Beautiful Sunlit Additions for Your Home

Sunroom porch designs allow you the best of both worlds. You can enjoy natural sunlight without the elements of the weather or bugs and other pests. A sunroom is defined as a room that offers fully insulated walls and ceilings and uses of insulated glass for the windows and doors. Sunroom porch designs offer a variety of choices with unlimited potential. No matter what your current situation, there are sunroom porch designs to suit your needs. You can choose from totally glass sunrooms, patio rooms, pool enclosures, glass walls under an existing roof, screens under an existing roof, conservatories and solariums.

One very popular style available is the solarium. With these, your entire porch will be glass thus allowing you to see above you. The solarium design typically offers glass on both the walls and the roof. Built on a frost proof base the solarium sunroom porch designs should include, heating/cooling, electrical and interior finishes that will provide you necessities of a standard room as well as offer protection from harmful UV rays form the sun.

Sunroom Porch Designs

Another favorite is conservatory sunroom porch designs. These are characterized by a unique roof design styled like the Victorian glass houses of the 19th century. Typically, you'll find more decorative style and a wider choice of plans available in conservatory sunroom porch designs. Just as with the solariums, these rooms should have climate control, UV protection and treated glass.

Current sunroom systems offer many advantages not available in earlier designs. Things like: wall-to-wall glass with hidden screw systems, guaranteed leak proof systems, screens on windows, dirt resistant treated glass for the exterior, as well as several other options.

Today's sunroom porch designs allow additional living space to use as you choose. Den, play area, home office, exercise room...your choices are limitless.

DIY Home Design Ideas for the New Year - Budget Decoration

The beginning of a new year always incites creativity and motivation for change. We all seek to improve our lives, lose weight, become better people, and update the things that are old and worn out. For many of us, we seek to get our home in order and finally decorate those tough to tackle areas. Here are some great ways to get started on that interior design project you have been putting off for so long!

If you are starting from scratch with a room or whole house, the first thing you will need to do is create a plan. Start by describing what you want from this room. Things like function, style, color scheme, flexibility, and how often you will use the room are all things to consider. What state is the room currently in? Will you need to do some serious cleaning and organizing before beginning your project? It’s a good idea to make a list of all the things that you will need to do before beginning. Another great way to plan is to look through decorating magazines and interior design websites for creative ideas. You may also want to look into purchasing some home design software to help you visualize your interior décor (of course, only if you are relatively computer- literate). You can also get fantastic home design ideas by visiting decorator show homes, furniture stores, or organizational stores in your area.

Planning your project is one of the best ways to keep within a budget. You will need to determine how much you are willing to spend, and assign a budgeted amount for each item you are planning for. If you are re-using or re-furbishing existing items, then you will not need to budget as much for those items. Avoid impulse buys unless they are items that are part of your design plan.

Creating a floor plan may or may not be necessary, depending on how much you are changing the room, the function the room will take on, and your skill in measuring and drawing out the area. A simple way to create a floor plan is to use graph paper, and assign each square to a measurement, for example 1 square could equal 1 foot. You would then measure your room and draw each wall and piece of furniture at the scale you decided. It may take some practice, but it really helps when laying out tight spaces.

Clearing the clutter is another important part of do it yourself decorating. You will need a blank canvas so that the design of your space will show through. Too many times, a beautiful design becomes hidden under layers of clutter. Start by pulling everything out, and going through it all, separating things into categories (including trash and donation piles). Then, assign a place for each category. To keep a home organized, you really need to give everything a home, and always return it to it’s home. This way nothing can ever be out of place.

Don’t be afraid to try new decorating ideas! The new year is a great time to use new and exciting paint colors, or go bold with artwork & accessories! Interior decor is a great place to show your personality and be really creative.

So You Want to Sell Your Home

As the market has cooled from a frantic seller market to a very slow buyer market a number of articles and lots of word of mouth advice has appeared on how to sell your home. Ideas on ways to entice buyers vary from milk and cookies to offering the latest model Rolls Royce if you buy the house. Trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean or Tuscany seem to be big this season. Some owners have tried offering a 10% fee to selling agents in hopes an agent will steer a client to their house instead of the one down the street. Another idea resurrected from the '90's is burying statues of St Joseph on the property. The list is endless and yet many homes continue to sit on the market with no prospective purchasers in site.

As some homes continue to remain unsold after their competition has sold sellers are looking for answers. The first tendency is to blame the agent when the property doesn't sell immediately. Some agents are a contributing factor if a home has not sold; especially if the agent didn't do a thorough Market Analysis, or has done nothing except put up a sign. Fortunately these agents are relatively few in number. Most agents take pride in their work. We really enjoy helping you move to a new home or another area or state. That's our job. Occasionally there seems to be to no reason why one home on a block sells immediately and another stays on the market for 6 months. Yet the market is usually logical and orderly if you can figure out the key. While there are exceptions to all rules; it seems to me homes don't sell for one of four reasons. A home that has one or two of those reasons will stay on the market for a long time. A home that has all four items will be on the market forever.

THE FOUR MAJOR REASONS A HOME DOESN'T SELL:

1. The Property is Overpriced:

No one wants to hear this. All sellers know the agent has not placed a high enough price on their home and all buyers know the price is ridiculously high. However there is a mid-level that works for all parties. The trick is finding that level. A well done Market Evaluation is a great start. In addition, Sellers should look at their competition. If the house down the street is at the same price you would like then they should be in the same condition. If your competition has a fabulous new kitchen while you still have avocado appliances and chipped formica you need to rethink your price. Testing the market is not a good strategy. While you are testing a price that is $100,000 more then the competition, those other homes will sell and you will become an old property. When a home has been on the market for a long period without an offer buyers believe there is something wrong with the property. Buyers will make an offer even if it's over-priced is something all sellers believe and it isn't true. Buyers pick a price range they are comfortable with and look at homes in that range. Many have learned from bitter experience that making a low offer on a high priced home makes most sellers angry instead of ready to negotiate.

2. The Property is not in Market Ready Condition:

Sellers who are unwilling to get their property in market condition should either not sell or be prepared for a very low price. I'm not talking about remodeling a kitchen or adding another bedroom. Market condition is clean. Clear out all clutter. If you have the resources you should always paint. This is especially true if your favorite color is mauve and you have painted all the rooms in various shades of purple. It doesn't have to be white but a good neutral color will update a property. New carpet is a better choice then a carpet allowance. Many of today's buyers work long hours and don't have the time or energy to think about fixing up a property. They want it clean and in move in shape. $300.00 in flowers will do wonders for a home. Most people make half of their decision on a home before they get out of the car. A great interior with no curb appeal will sit on the market.

3. The Property has a Fundamental Flaw:

Maybe you don't pay much attention to the new freeway but you can bet a potential buyer will. You may love the idea of a detached family room but it may not be a big plus when you go to sell. Rooms that have odd shapes or baths that are too small or floor plans that don't flow well will all keep a home on the market longer the others without the flaws. I remember a home that had four bedrooms upstairs without one upstairs bath. The bath was downstairs and around a corner. It stayed on the market a long time in a hot market. You may be used to your homes quirks but buyers will always go for the more conventional home on a quiet street.

4. The Fee to the Buyer Agent is Very Low :

Of the four reasons listed the fee paid to the agent is the least problematic and affects the time a home stays on the market less the other factors by a wide margin. However this is often a sticking point for many sellers. In a hot market a low buyer agent fee doesn't make a lot of difference. It may take two weeks to sell instead of 4 days but overall it will sell fairly fast. In a slow market a low fee to the buyer's agent means you may be on the market a long time. There are many agents who will show your home with a low fee if it fits their buyer's needs but reality says that if there are 40 homes for sale in a neighborhood with a similar fee and you are well under that fee most agents will show other homes first. You would do the same.. it's human nature. This doesn't mean you have to go over what is customary in your area but you should be close.

I know that everyone knows someone who had all of the above problems with a home and sold it in a day. The fact is that some houses have a certain feeling about them and will sell no matter what their condition, price or location. But for most properties the above list represents most of the factors that will affect how long it takes to sell your home.

Ageless Limestone For Your Kitchen Flooring

Limestone can be a good choice for kitchen flooring due to its subtle patterning and pale, neutral colors. This all makes limestone kitchen flooring a good choice in contemporary kitchen design. It is also a good choice because it provides hardness, low porosity, looks attractive, and is hardwearing and long-lasting. It also has oil resistant properties, although is should be sealed to prevent staining and to keep it looking its best and to be able to clean and maintain. So limestone is usually offered in a honed (unpolished) finish. Its softer, subtle hues make it a frequent choice of homeowners, architects and designers for flooring, countertops and interior or exterior walls.

Limestone kitchen flooring can possess a high resistance to freezing and thawing conditions. Therefore, limestone can be used in just about any atmospheric condition without it being affected. It is also exceedingly durable and easily maintained.

Limestone has been used in flooring for thousands of years. Limestone is a sedimentary stone that is made up of a least 50% calcite or calcium carbonate content, as well as being composed of grains, crushed sea shells, bones of sea animals, or fragments or biologic origin including fossils and dinosaur bones. Limestone can be a calcareous stone in that it can be highly reactive to certain acidic substances such as vinegars, and wine. Limestone is softer than igneous rocks such as granite, however some types of limestone are very hard and dense. This makes limestone suitable for most interior applications including kitchen flooring. Limestone also has a good non-slip surface, and limestone floor tile can be easily stained, making it a good choice for kitchen floors. Floor tiles can be etched by acids. Limestone has a compressive strength of 30,000/lbs./sq. inch.

Limestone kitchen floor tiles are available in colors such as black, gray, white, yellow, and brown. Pure limestone is white or off-white. However due to impurities such as clay, sand, iron oxide, or other materials, limestone tends to exhibit different colors. There are several different types of surface finishes. The texture variations are produced because limestone tiles vary in shade and surface appearance. Limestone is made up of a large family of different kinds of stone that can vary in character. Limestone kitchen flooring tiles are polished, honed, brushed, and water worn.

The variations in limestone vary greatly in hardness, density, and porosity from stone to stone. Some types of limestone tend to be very soft and should not be cut on. The surface of the stone can easily scratch. Some types of limestone are very dense and hard and can be finished to a polished or a glossy shiny surface. Softer stones cannot be polished to this high gloss finish.

Limestone has long been the choice of architects and many landmarks around the world, especially in North America and Europe. Limestone has been used in many public building such as train stations, banks and other structures built in the early 20th and late 19th centuries. Limestone provides character and depth to any kitchen.

Why Japanese Interior Decorating May Be For You

Have you been considering using Japanese gardens as an inspiration for your own landscaping ideas? Japanese gardens have become increasingly popular recently because of the aura surrounding the gardens with an element of peace and tranquility.

The benefits of a Japanese garden do not need to be expensive and they do not need lots of maintenance if it has been done properly. To enjoy it without spending a fortune, it is a good idea to plan the project or landscape properly.

Japanese Gardens and Japanese Interior Decorating

The problem that comes with Japanese gardens is that people have their own misconceptions about what should go into it. A lot of people think that to have a great Japanese garden you need lots of exotic flowers, but the truth is that this is simply not the case. If you look closely, Japanese gardens make the most out of the structures to help give out that distinctive look. However, to be able to achieve the look and get everything looking great and feeling right it is important to understand all of the principles of a Japanese garden. If you understand the principles, it will be a lot easier to manage the look and keep it looking great.

Nature is an important thing to look into when it comes to planning a Japanese garden. If you get into your mind that you want to go for all things that are natural, then it will help you considerably. Imagine if you are going to do a pond. With a pond you should go for the natural round pond instead of the conventional square one. Another thing that should be carefully considered when planning the garden is space.

Some people see any empty space and have the urge to fill it in with something. Well, the thing with Japanese gardens is that if there is empty space, it can help to compliment other parts of the landscaping. If you did not have any empty space, it could compromise the look and maybe even look too cramped. It is a wise idea to never put something big into such a small space. So, in order to get the correct look, it is a good idea to use elements that will complement everything else.

For the basic look of a Japanese garden, an enclosure will need to be fitted into the plans. It can help to get that feeling of a nice relaxed retreat and also have a nice seclusion area away from everywhere else. You can achieve this by using fences and gates and it is a good idea to use an entrance and an exit point. So, remember some of these pointers when it comes to planning your Japanese gardens and you will enjoy the look for years to come as well as enjoying a peaceful and relaxing garden.

Bed and Breakfast with Lace Curtains and Charm

“Did you know that there are more than 20,000 bed and breakfast establishments in the US and Canada?”

My wife looked out the window at the magnificent view of the Chesapeake Bay and replied:

“Of course I knew that! And I also know that it is the fastest growing segment of the travel industry in this country. More than 8 billion dollars are spent a year in Bed & Breakfast lodgings.”

“How did you know all that?”

“I’m reading the same article you have been reading, my sweet!”

The B&B on the Bay, where we had decided to spend a long week-end, more than justified the exhaustive search we had undertaken. We would not settle for less than a B&B that would meet our requirements at least halfway. It also justified the long trip from Richmond and a discreet absence from professional obligations.

We found what we looked for. A charming colonial mansion, complete with portico, columns and an ancient coach house that had been converted into several ample studios. Impeccable grounds and a marvelous view of the Bay. Besides, the postcard quality did not end there. There was a sense of peace and tranquility that matched perfectly the surroundings and also the cheerful interior. Added to that, additional charm appeared in the person of the owners of the place. Col (ret) and Mrs. Armbruster, were the perfect hosts. We felt that we had found a home away from home.

So far, B&B’s have never disappointed us. And it has spurred us to try remote areas of the country where other traditions and other customs have given us a better insight into the essence of the republic itself. We have stayed in converted schoolhouses, old farmhouses, modernized warehouses, Queen Anne Victorian homes and mansions, barns and an occasional adobe house. We have not missed the log cabin and the floating barge.

We have stayed in the so called country inns, where the emphasis is on the evening meals. Also in countless Bed and Breakfast establishment, where breakfast is more than just a meal but a convivial social occasion with all the cozy elements of a family reunion. Naturally, we have even tried a few home-stay places where a single room and a bathroom down the hall are the usual fare. Common to all is the informal cordiality of the owners or managers, and the willingness to provide the necessary comforts. And this includes enlightened conversation and first hand information about the area, its traditions, points of interests and best places to eat.

“Listen” said my wife as she sipped the pre-breakfast champagne and orange juice the Col. had gracefully sent up with a basket of fruit. “I’ve been thinking.” She raised the flute and continued:

“Why don’t you ask the good Colonel to let us keep the room for another couple of days?”

“I already have!”

Attract What's Light - Bright - and Beautiful

Those with whom we assemble, we soon resemble!

This simple old saying hides a deep Truth that can enlighten and empower every aspect of our lives:

Who we are — our very essence — is continually being transformed by the company we keep.

Stated differently, when we keep the company of what is light and bright, our lives get lighter and brighter. And when we keep the company of what is dark and discouraging, our lives can’t help but be dragged downward.

This idea might sound a little simplistic at first, but its power soon becomes evident when we put it to use in the quest to realize our highest aspirations. The key lies in understanding that this principle is active on multiple levels at once. For instance, when referring to "the company we keep," we of course mean the people we spend time with every day — family, friends, co-workers, etc. However, on a deeper and more important level, “company” can also refer to the thoughts and feelings moving within us in any given moment.

Have you ever been home alone in a fine mood, enjoying a meal perhaps, only to find yourself bored or depressed an hour later? That’s a perfect example of the effect of hanging out with the wrong interior friends. When we are unconscious to the operation of our minds, any indigent thought or feeling that passes through us has the power to strike up a conversation and drag us into its dark circle of influence.

But just as it’s possible for us to keep bad interior company that pulls us down, so is it possible to keep positive inner company that works to raise us up in any moment we choose to remember it. This not only means that we can choose not to get dragged down when we are alone, but it also means that we can choose not to get dragged down when we find ourselves in the presence of negative people as well.

How encouraging! When life places us in a situation where a run-in with someone is inevitable — perhaps at work, with a family member, in a store, etc. — we can choose to keep the company of good and true interior friends who can help keep us from falling into negative states. And therein lies the key: when we remember that keeping the company of negative interior friends is a choice, instead of an obligation, we are free to keep the company of compassion instead of anger, generosity instead of greed, and patience instead anxiety.

Building on this idea, let’s look at four common types of people that can be identified by the four prevailing dark states that inhabit them. By learning to recognize and understand the interior workings of these four types of “toxic people,” we gain important insight into what is dark and limiting inside of us. In this way, we begin the process of liberation from everything inside of us that stands in the way of knowing the peace, happiness, success, and love that we long for.

1 Muckrakers: These negative sprits live to drag up old painful events and then revel in the anger, resentment, or bitterness that such unhappy memories hold. Stay away from any spirit, in others or in yourself, that wants you to dive into some suffering over what happened in any past moment.

2 Mud Slingers: These malicious spirits pull themselves up by pulling others down. They love to gossip, criticize, judge, and denigrate anyone who ever had the misfortune of spending time with them. The only loyalty these denizens of the unconscious worlds have is to their own pain, which they feed by involving everyone they can in their mud slinging.

3 Swamp Dwellers: There is a group of mired spirits that thrive on low vibrations, and that require a human instrument to play out their endless dark dissonance. Easily recognizable, these misfortunate forces serve up dreadful mental pictures of past and future events for the sake of the unnatural reactions they produce. Ignore these corrupted spirits and they must take their evil speculations elsewhere.

4 Life Haters: These dark spirits perpetuate their hold on the human soul by resisting the beautiful gifts of life. They trick us into commiserating with their complaining, cruelty, and irritation because without our unconscious consent, these chronically conflicted spirits can’t spread their poison.

Just as harmful viruses require a human host to exist and thrive, so do negative states require the unconscious consent of human beings to carry out their dark mission. For what power does a negative thought have other than the power to convince a person to do its bidding? The answer is none!

When we begin to consciously withdraw our consent to associate with toxic people, and the toxic thoughts and feelings inside of us, we leave them with no place to thrive. Our real inner work is to sweep clean the places in ourselves where such creatures reside which in turn brightens our life and the lives of everyone around us.

Begin today, this very moment, to withdraw any permission you have unknowingly granted these dark spirits to be in your life. Do not judge yourself, or those around you in whom these misdirected forces are active, but instead come awake and refuse to spend one more moment of your life lending your precious life force to their dark purposes.

This powerful, positive action will change your life. As you begin to refuse to consort with what is dark, you’ll find that you begin to attract with what is light, bright, and cheerful. Your relationships will deepen, your professional life will take on new vigor and freshness, and the whole of your days will begin to resemble the radiant Life that you have deliberately chosen as your conscious companion.

Choosing Window Blinds

Are there times when you walk into a house anywhere and feel great just because you are there? This could possibly have something to do with the owners but most of the time there is another reason for this. The complete package of the house, the decorations (interior and exterior), the fabrics used and overall the general feel of a place is comfortable and your total perception can change and you can relate to spending time there.

Although Initially you may not be able to determine or reveal just what it is you like so much about the place, but you know in yourself you have that feeling of happiness and comfort. My suggestion is to check out the blinds or curtains, and maybe these are contributing to your overall feeling. You could believe that it’s impossible that the blinds or curtains alone would create this big effect on a living area but they can and will alter the whole essence of any room.

What is your idea or concept of blinds? Is it a flat dated piece of canvas or pieces of plastic or wood that can roll up, pull up and lowered by cords, well you will have to update your views. Blinds now come in a huge variety of designs and styles, from Venetian, Vertical blinds to Roman blinds. You can also source these in a variety of materials from wooden, fabric and metal. So if you are considering redecorating whether interior, or exterior, don’t underestimate the effect you can get with these varieties, and have fun with the colors and designs available. A couple of things you will need to consider before making your final choice on the purpose and function of your blinds and what you need them to do.

1. Block out light.
2. Let light in and out.
3. Privacy. Do you need to be able to see out or stop prying eyes seeing in?
4. Soundproof. Wood or heavily lined fabric muffle noise
5. Insulation. Heavy-duty blinds also have an insulating effect.

When you have chosen the material for your blinds, then you can have a great time choosing your colors and designs. These must be of the correct style and design to have the effect on the total ambience and environment in your room. You can use blinds on their own, or team them with curtains or drapes and many other fine pieces and decorations to produce your own original effect. Of course all of this will be determined by your budget and time. So consult a home decorator or a great website to get information and helpful tips is http://www.blindsace.com

Interior Design and the Joy of Color

White: a nice color that stands for purity and innocence. But too much white might cause headaches; it might also make you nervous and restless. Therefore, white alone is not a very happy choice for interior decorations, although plenty of interior decorations magazines and TV commercials show us spotless white interiors. Is that so? Why don't you take a second look to note what other colors are there used to complete the picture?

In most cases white is used a background color. We see often brightly colored paintings hanging on white walls, red roses on a sparkling white piece of furniture, other colored accents here and there to complete the interior design, to give it meaning, balance or strength. White walls are a blessing in tropical areas. White's freshness is perfect for a Mediterranean look, for a home in sunny Tuscany, for your beach house or for other such residences. But if you don't live in such an area, choose your colors carefully. Remember that colors influence your life, your behavior and your mood. Choose a wrong color and you might live an uneasy time without even knowing what bothers you. But don't ever believe that neutral colors are ideal colors. Do you live a neutral life? Do you lack personality? No. You don't! So don't be afraid of color.

So far you know that white is classic but too much white might cease to be neutral and become and element of stress. The good news is that white goes well with any colors. A spot of red or orange to stimulate your appetite in the dining room, some blue or green accents to calm you down in the living room and bathroom, orange and yellow for your kitchen and pastel colors in your bedroom; these are the color arrangements generally recommended by interior designers. But in your home, you are the interior designer. You should choose the colors according to your personality and your feelings.

It's maybe time for a bolder color combination? A mixture of bright and wild colors like turquoise and orange or violet and lime? Take a look at the color wheel and choose either colors that are opposite in it or that sit next to each other. Opposite colors are complementary colors and neighboring colors provide for color harmony. You can find a color wheel easily online, even virtual color pickers, but pay attention when you choose your colors based upon such tools, as monitors' resolution may show colors slightly distorted than in reality.

Walls alone don't make interior decorations. Accents on the walls are nothing more than that: accents. The art of interior decorations sees your living space as a whole. So choosing colors refers not solely to walls and accents, but furniture and lighting as well. If you are not skilled enough to do this on your own, if you are not bold enough to experiment, then you should probably let a professional interior designer take a look at your home and decorate it accordingly.

Why Do You Need an Interior Designer?

Once upon a time your home looked great. You have heavily ornamented wallpapers on your walls, impressive Oriental carpets and old-fashioned (but not so worthy) furniture. And you live in the 21st century. You feel the need of a change.

This is just a possible scenario. Whatever your reasons, when you decide to redecorate your home, you should ask yourself a simple, but essential question: "DIY or hire a professional designer?"

If you are a busy businessman (or woman), you probably don't even consider do-it-yourself as an alternative. Sure you've already got the yellow pages in your hands or you are already browsing the Web looking for that perfect interior design firm to redecorate your home. But if you are not so busy, why should you hire an interior designer? You have all that free time, why not do something useful out of it? Because, if you are not experiences with interior design, if you have no skill whatsoever, your attempt might end up in a redecorating disaster. You'll need someone to help you get organized and tell you approximately how much everything is going to cost.

Of course, interior designers cost too. But hiring a professional interior designer from the start will prevent from having to pay unexpected costs like: the wrong color, the unsuitable piece of furniture, the "no-style" decorations and the out of place accents. In the modern competitive society, you might as well get lucky and find a decorator that offers a first consultation free of charge. Now, that's a price worth paying!

How do you know whether the interior designer will do the job right or not? Well, that's quite simple; the first (and free) consultation will be elucidatory - after you clarify to your decorator what colors you like, show him or her your home and the actual decorations, go together over some pictures (the decorator should have brought along some decoration samples or catalogues) of residences and styles; the professional interior designer should be able to identify your style. If the designer will not ask any personal questions related to hobbies, favorite colors, entertainment preferences, preferred movie stars, favorite music, cultural background or others of the kind, you should move to the next. A curios designer is a good designer. And a good designer will never try to impose his (her) style on you! A curious designer will use the information gathered in this first meeting to put up together some ideas for the next meeting. That's when he (or she) will show you plans, sketches, wallpaper samples, color samples, fabric samples and so on. Then you choose what you like, point out what you dislike and let your designer do the rest.

Consider an interior designer as your temporary employee and understand that you are allowed and should point out his or her mistakes. After all it's your house that needs a perfect interior design, so don't be afraid to impose your taste when necessary!

Doing Your Own Wedding Flowers

Making the decision to do your own wedding flowers should not be taken lightly, but with a little preparation and some practice, designing your own wedding flowers does not have to be as daunting as you might think.

For my own wedding, I chose to go this route, and I found that there were several things I could have done differently to make the process easier. Here are a few quick tips for doing your own wedding flowers on a budget.

First, start looking for a wholesale flower distributor early in the process. Make sure that you are allowed to purchase from them, as many wholesale distributors only sell to businesses with a tax ID number.

Second, start practicing with real flowers as soon as you can. I recommend that you choose flowers that are easy to work with, such as roses or other flowers with a defined head shape and sturdy stem. I chose Alstromeria as my main flower and found that making bouquets and centerpieces was difficult because the flowers were delicate, had lots of greenery and had weak stems.

Third, ask for help from people around you who are artistically inclined. I had virtually no artistic ability and heavily relied on my mom who is very artistic! She did a fantastic job and I never would have been able to do this project without her. I also recommend that you get help from as many people as you can who are interested in helping. You never know who will be the floral-savant of your inner circle!

Last, I would make sure that in the long run, doing your own wedding flowers is what you really want to be doing the day before or the day of your wedding. I found the process to be very stressful, not because the task of doing flowers was difficult, but because I had so many other things on my mind. Also make sure that you have some sort of back-up plan in case some of your designs don't turn out exactly as you had hoped. We purchased extra boutonnieres the morning of the wedding to replace some that I had made that didn't turn out quite right!

In general, if you plan to design your own wedding flowers, take these tips and measure the amount of work and time you will need to spend against the other things you have to do the day of your wedding. Your wedding should be fun, and if last-minute tasks are too much to handle, you may find yourself wishing you'd hired a wedding florist instead!

Tables And Chairs

One thing every dining room needs is tables and chairs. Though you may just assume this is true, I have seen many people do without them. Some families choose to eat dinner in front of the television, and they don’t have a lot of company. Because of this, they skip the investment in a good dining room set. This probably isn’t a good idea, though eating in front of the television on occasion never hurt anyone. In my home, however, I like to know that we eat together at the table most of the time.

Some days, the only time a family has to connect is when they are eating dinner together. Tables and chairs in the dining room also sometimes double as a place to play games together, or as a homework or study area for the kids. Some people even use their tables and chairs for doing bills, or even as a makeshift office. If you have a place like this, don’t let it become a place for clutter to pile up. Use it as a place for your family to reconnect on a daily basis. There may be no better way to stay in touch with each other’s lives.

Tables and chairs come in all styles and prices. You can get an expensive dining room set anywhere they sell furniture. These tables and chairs can be make of almost any type of wood, and can come in a variety of finishes to match the rest of your décor. You can go classic by buying a set that looks antique, or you can get modern looking sets that are made entirely of glass. You can also get marble topped tables, or you can get something done entirely in black lacquer. What you get will be up to you and the style of your home.

You can also find used tables and chairs for your home. Sometimes getting used sets is the best way to go. This way, you can take your time and refinish the tables and chairs to your liking. Not everyone wants to do this, but if you are into home improvement or interior design, you may find this to be a great project. Just take it from me, however, not everyone can do it. I once found an amazing old table that was covered with layers of paint. I tried, but I only got half way through the project before I had to give up.

Looking For Japanese Interior Decorating Ideas? Why Not Try Oriental Rugs?

When it comes to creating a simple, stylish and oriental look to the home, many people often turn to oriental rugs. They come in a variety of delicate, intricate patterns and they range in price so that everyone can have a chance of owning one. However, if you do choose to have an oriental rug to help give your home a Japanese Interior Decorating look, bear in mind that you will have to keep it maintained if you want it to last!

Cleaning Your Oriental rug

The most obvious type of cleaning you really need to do on a daily basis is vacuuming the rug. As with many other types of rugs, oriental rugs can look dirty quite quickly and some may even need to be vacuumed more than once a day. However, you do need to ensure that you have the vacuum on a setting which will not damage the rug. Usually it is better to have a setting which does not allow the vacuum to go into all of the fibers deep down in the rug; you only need to go over the top of it to keep the surface looking clean and tidy.

Keeping it vacuumed is usually sufficient enough to keep the rug clean, but what about if you spill something on it? Well in that case you really need to treat the spillage as soon as possible. As with anything, once a stain has had a chance to settle it is a lot harder to remove it. In case you are worried about ruining your rug, you may want to think of taking it to a specialist cleaner who knows all about your type of rug and who will know exactly how to clean it. Your local advertiser paper will allow you to find one close to your area. Failing that, you may be able to find out how to clean it on the rugs label if it has one. Some rugs do and that would make your life a lot easier!

Generally oriental rugs need specialist cleaners in order to remove the stains without harming the rug. It is possible to give it a wipe with water but overall it needs to be specially cleaned to fully remove all stains. If you do attempt to clean the rug yourself without knowing what you are doing, it is possible that the colors will run and that you will end up with a dull looking carpet.

So, overall treat your rug well by vacuuming it daily and try to avoid washing it yourself. Treat all spills as quickly as possible and you should end up with an oriental rug which lasts for years to come.

Sinks and Bathtubs - Choices for Modern Bathrooms

Are you thinking of decorating your bathroom? Thinking of adding some personality and pizzazz to the lavatory? You don't have to spend a fortune to add elegance and ambience. Follow our suggestions and you can put the room back into bathroom

Converting your old bathroom into a blend of style and sophistication doesn't have to break your budget.

Choosing the right mix of paint color, paint texture and selecting complimenting bathroom fixtures, including bath tub, sinks and commodes. The good news is that in doing all of this, you wont have to break the bank. If you do a bit of shopping, you can find deals, and more often than not, you'll find a great discount on all three.

The first place you should start off with is your bathroom fixtures. Its not necessary for you to replace your bath tub, toilet or sink, however, special attention should be placed on their overall condition and color. Normally, your bathtub should be the same color as your sink and commode. If its not, it will stick out like a sore thumb. Next, look at the surface of your bathtub and sink.

Should you consider reglazing them?

Some terms to keep in mind...

What does Close-Coupled mean?

Close-Coupled is used to describe a type or style of toilet wherein the cistern attaches directly to the pan.

What does W.C. mean?

W.C. stands for 'water closet', but is more widely known as a toilet.

What is a Cistern?

A Cistern is the compartment of a toilet that contains the water needed for flushing.

Varieties and styles of bathroom fixtures abound and if you are content with your choices of bathtub and sink, then let them be the basis for your interior-decorating plan. First, determine if there are any striking features of your tub or sink. For example, are they antique, does your tub have claw feet, what color are they, what are they made out of? Answering these questions will give you plenty of starting points to begin your decorating scheme. A good idea is to put all of the answers to the above questions down in a notebook. This may help you brainstorm some decorating ideas and strategies. By using the best features of the fixtures already in your bathroom, you can simply redecorate with items that will accentuate the undying fixtures that are already in place.

Since it's the largest single item in your bathroom, let the bathtub help you make your choices. If you have an antique tub, then go with an antique motif and decor.

Lighting is one thing that is often overlooked in most bathroom decorating adventures. If the lights are too bright, they may highlight defects in your walls, and cast the wrong light on things. On the other hand, if you provide inadequate lighting, you'd find it will cast all the wrong shadows. Also, remember that the lighting will be different in your local paint store than it will be in your bathroom, so take samples, and have a good look.

You can add elegance to your bathroom by accenting with the use of glass, marble, brass, gold and crystal. Its important to remember though, that adding brass or gold will increase your budget, so be careful. As an alternative to having to tile the walls around your bathtub, consider either a tub surround, or, simply add a couple of decorative tiles. This will instantly add style, elegance and keep you within your budget.

If you think your bathroom is lacking enough light, consider using mirrors more effectively to reflect the light. This can often be cheaper than installing new lights. Even a chandelier can have the same impact, just be sure you have enough room. Another consideration is adjustable lighting. Then you can dim the lights, fill up the tub, and enjoy a soothing and relaxing bath without the need to light candles.

You should be able to decorate your bathroom without blowing your budget. It all depends on how much homework you do beforehand. Visit stores , look in newspapers and talk to friends who have recently decorated their bathrooms.

Studio Living - The Work Area

Deciding on the design of your work area depends on whether you are happy working on the kitchen table, or whether you need privacy and a businesslike atmosphere. If you work from home on a permanent basis then your interior design concepts should incorporate a design for a dedicated workspace. Otherwise, a surface that can be folded away or double as a dining table would best suit the part-time home worker.

Flexible workstation units that can be moved around and/or folded up would be the best choice for the work area in a studio apartment. Look for a design or create your own interior design concepts that will provide ample storage space for all your work related equipment, files and accessories, as well as features such as pull-out sections and adjustable shelving for maximum flexibility. A home office constructed from MDF (medium-density fibreboard) and translucent plastic on a steel frame is an ingenious interior design idea that provides storage for computer equipment and files in the door section and a pivoting, adjustable shelf to hold a computer monitor. The whole unit should be designed or purchased with the idea of being able to be closed up when not in use. By attaching castor wheels to the unit, it can be easily moved from one room to another.

Another great interior design idea for the work area is to have one side of the desk hinged to a room wall, so that when not in use the workspace can be folded down against the wall leaving an uncluttered space. Space saving computer trolleys, designed to hold computer, monitor, keyboard, printer and other equipment are widely available and come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Putting your own interior design thoughts together are not as difficult as one would imagine it to be. A few basic questions should be asked to start moving in the right direction. Does my work require much specialist equipment? Can I plan in sufficient file and shelf space near to my work area for easy retrieval? Would a purpose-built mobile computer table with shelves for printer and keyboard best suit my need?

Living in a studio apartment requires that your interior design concepts should always be based on maximising space to its fullest potential and avoid clutter at all costs. A wide choice of filling and work storage systems are available, including wall-hung, stacking and mobile units to make it easier to achieve your space saving ideas. Vertically arranged designs offer the maximum storage capacity while occupying the least amount of floor space.

Remember look for flexible, space saving systems and stacking units on wheels. Don't put interior design concepts and styles before personal comfort and enhance your living space by hiding unattractive office equipment behind cupboard doors or screens.

Studio Living - The Living Area

Nesting tables are intrinsically space saving, while portable pieces are extremely versatile. Make use of any spaces inside and under seating by packing with storage containers. Interior design concepts for seating should make use of flexible seating arrangements. Two types of seating are practically well suited to one-room living: modular pieces provide maximum flexibility and function, as well as comfort, whereas minimal seating, which can be folded up or stacked when not in use, is ideal for maximizing the use of limited space. Interior design ideas do not necessarily have to come from a paid interior designer, quite simply, with a bit of creativity and imagination and good basic interior planning this can all be successfully put together by the average home owner.

Modular seating, originally used in interior design concepts in the 1960s is an ideal form of seating. These fabric-covered foam shapes are practical, easy and fun to make. As well as offering endless seating permutations to suit a variety of lifestyles and interiors, they can also double as a spare bed. Modular furniture can be cut from hi-density polyurethane foam to your specific design and covered in stretch jersey fabric. Sofas that convert to beds are available in many shapes and sizes, including the traditional version with integral mattress and futons on folding bases. Another interior design favourite for maximising space is an up-to-date version of an old camping or director's chair. Made from aluminium and covered with canvas, they are lightweight, comfortable and easily stored when not in use.

While there is always a need for small side tables, in restricted living spaces the emphasis must be on adaptable units that not only provide convenient surfaces but also double as stools or storage units. Look for designs that offer extra flexibility, such as nesting and folding tables, or units on castors that can be moved easily from one part of the room to another as required. Taking interior design to new heights, wall-hung side tables with fold down picture surfaces made in beech, steel and glass, offer more than a side table. A picture or photograph of your choice can be displayed beneath the clipped-on glass top so that the table, when folded up can be hung on the wall as a work of art. Nesting tables are also widely available. Look for designs that also include a chest of drawers for all those odds and sods that may need a place to be stored in.

Interior design ideas for studio living must really be designed around the concept of maximising space and reducing clutter. A few basic tips to keep in mind for the average DIY interior designer are to look for mechanisms and fittings that transform single items into multi-functional pieces of furniture. Hide clutter in storage boxes or drawers fitted into all available spaces in and around furniture. Choose furniture that is well designed and well made: cheaper products can be false economy unless intended for a limited life. Another interior design concept that is not always utilised to its full potential is, maximize the use of walls for storage by hanging up furniture and other items.

With a bit of clever thinking and interior design planning, studio living can be a very spacious environment to inhabit. Remember, the quality and comfort of life will very much depend on how much space you can create and how well adapted it is to your lifestyle.

Decorative Light Switchplate Covers - Make Them Your New Year's Resolution

What’s your favorite home fashion avenue to travel down? There’s the infamous country road, filled with daisies and worn wood designs. The colonial path brings to mind the heritage this county, while colonial country creates a fine blend of the two. Contemporary, classic contemporary and contemporary country bring a modern flair to the traditional list. No matter your personal home decorating taste, why would you sell your home short by having plain, white, rectangular switch plate covers surrounding your light switches? One needs to have a bit more sense than that, making a promise to take hold of the topic for 2007.

Interior designers are still seeing the wide-open floor plans, while interior decorators are still seeing an intense mix of contrasting colors with an extreme and precise attention to detail. One such detail is the plain, bland switchplate cover being eagerly replaced with a decorative, coordinating one.

For example, say you have a great room, complete with cathedral ceilings and antique brass ceiling fan with mahogany blades. The classic “Fleur-de-Lis” pattern is present in both the metalworkings and the tiny details throughout. You’ve chosen a calming, sage green for the longest wall, leaving ample space for other neutral colors throughout the room. A plain, white switchplate cover will hardly do any justice in this room but a decorative cover, perhaps with the fleur-de-lis design, mahogany overtones or sage undertones to accent your decorating sense is a more suitable cover for such a significant hole in your wall.

Think about the number of times each day that you turn your light switches on and off. Now think about the number of guests you have in your home. You add each accent to your home with care, so why on earth would you buy a $.50 piece of plastic as your switchplate cover?

One room that is rarely overlooked for such an item is the bathroom, probably due to the ease of purchasing one. You can walk down the bath aisle at your favorite specialty shop or department store and find a thousand and one things for this room of the house- and they’re all coordinated, taking the guesswork out of the entire planning process. Toothbrush holders, soap dishes, lotion dispensers and towels all match the trashcan and switchplate cover to make your embellishing life easier. Once in while if you look in the right places, you can find similar items for a bedroom, usually for infants and children. Lucky for all of us, the business eyes are opening wide to see the idea and fill the demand for decorative switchplate covers for every room in your home.

Alison Blakely recommends that you visit http://www.switchhits.com/ for more information on shopping for decorative light switchplate covers.

Tips and Suggestions on Planning Your Living Room

More than any other room, there are no fixed rules when it comes to designing the living room. A living room includes a bit of everything. It’s where you relax, watch television and socialize, so it can take on any shape depending on what you choose to focus on. Here’re some tips and suggestions on planning your living room.

After deciding on your objectives for the living room, plan the crucial features that you want to work your design around. For example, if the television set is the focus, its size and shape will also determine the design of the room. A regular set may require just a console, while a plasma set may need a false wall to hide the cables. Seating in the room will also revolve around the television. By keeping the focal points in mind, the other furnishings will fall into place more easily.

Layout is an important part of planning the living room. Work out the placement of the furnishings by observing how the traffic will flow, and work with the space accordingly.

Plan special features such as a water fountain or feature wall in areas of heavy traffic for maximum impact, but move the chill-out areas to quieter parts of the room.

Storage is another essential factor in the home. Unless you’re blessed with huge storeroom or have few possessions, you’ll need to work cabinets and other nifty clutter-busters into your living room too.

Hiring a carpenter is the most popular option. Chic design-integrated, built-in cupboards are the storage area of choice these days. The big bonus is that they are perfect for dead space in awkward or irregular corners of the room. If built-in cupboards are too permanent for your liking, there are also modular options from furniture retailers that you can mix, match and change around whenever you like.

One tip when planning the living room for a big family, is to focus on storage, so something for everyone will be available when needed. This might mean a row of floor-to-ceiling cabinets with built-in niche, and a custom-built coffee table with hidden storage panels to help display as well as keep away the family’s belongings.

For a retro-themed living room of a young couple, the sofa set can be made redundant with padded half-walls and building booth seats for the dining area. Framed vintage fabric panels wrap up the theme, and add interest to the plain walls.

How to Properly Hang Tapestries in Your Home

In contrast to a framed print, each tapestry is made on the loom separately and it is because they are made individually that there may be differences in the weave, hanging undulations and moreover, they may not be square in shape.

Several of the concluding jobs are done by people, who specialize in tapestry, on pieces, which are obtained immediately from the loom. Afterwards, these wall decors are completed using hands by including linens, rod pockets and borders so that they can be hanged without much trouble. Some tapestries may also have tabs or loops (not necessary for the purpose of hanging). The cushion is then completed by wrapping or covering it with velvet backing, which are available in five colors, along with a concealed zip fastener and matching piping.

Hanging tapestries with rod pockets can be done by in a number of methods.

First chop of a particular length of round rod of wood. Now you put in tiny cup-hooks in to both the ends of the rod and then you place them over tiny picture hook pins. Now isn’t this a simple, fast and cheap method?

You can also buy a metal rod along with finials from an interior store or a local drapery shop. You can hang the tapestry off the wall by making use of the brackets given. Moreover, you can also hang the rod over two nails on the wall hammered at a forty-five degree angle. You may also include a pair of cords with tassels to both sides if you wish to link the tapestry to your present decoration. You may want to make use of this technique in case your tapestry has hanging loops by placing the rod above the tapestry on the wall.

However, in case your tapestry is not lined then you can frame it like you frame a manuscript or a good painting.

Japanese Interior Decorating Combined With a Japanese Garden

Japanese gardens have become increasingly popular and it seems that they will continue to do so thanks to their simplicity and their peacefulness. There is something truly beautiful about a Japanese garden and it provides a place of beauty for the whole family to relax and escape in.

Usually a home with a Japanese garden also has a Japanese interior design, but it is possible to simply have a Japanese garden without the need for a matching interior!

Enjoy the Tranquility of a Japanese Garden

With the world so full of stress and panic these days, it is often rare to find a place where you can sit and relax just to gain your breath back. We are often so wrapped up in our problems that we simply cannot open our minds and find peace. This can cause many health problems and it is also not good for our souls. That is why a Japanese garden is often used to help.

We do not always have time to go for a long walk just to find somewhere beautiful to relax in. So, this means that we have to find our peace in a close by location and how much closer can you get than your own back yard? Creating a Japanese garden doesn’t have to be a stressful and huge task, it can in fact be quite easy.

The best way to do it is to research either on the internet or in books which will be able to give you pictures as well as explanations as to how to create a good Japanese garden. Often the main thing you have to keep in mind is that everything has to be natural and it is perfectly ok to have a lot of space within the garden. Many people feel that a Bonsai tree is what makes a Japanese garden whilst others have their own idea as to what should be included.

A Japanese garden is generally based on a ‘Zen’ theory. It should be calm and tranquil and often a pond is a great idea. The flowers do not have to be overly exotic just as long as they look clean and taken care of. There should be nothing bad or unsightly within the garden and once finished, you will have a haven to relax in.

Overall researching all you that can about what you can place in your own Japanese garden and how to design it is a good idea. That way you will be able to achieve results faster and you will know what you are doing.

The Effect of Curtains as Window Treatments

You can dramatically alter your windows by adding different types of fabric and colors. You can also easily alter them in the way that you hang your curtains. During your home design, or re-design you’ll find a lot of unique ways to change the look of your home, and using the windows as a starting point, at least for planning can be a tremendous idea.

As well the way you use tiebacks for curtains and drapes have a lot to do with the way your windows look.

The most usual positions for the tie back are the middle tie, the center tie, the high tie, the crisscross tie and the low tie.

When you use the high tie you’re hanging either one or two panels on the window up above the center point of the windows height.

When using the middle tie you’re pulling the panels back to the point nearer to the middle of the curtain. Usually the best affect is to tie back at the exact center point.

If you’re looking to do the low tie, then you’ll be pulling the curtain back about ¾ of the distance from the top of the floor.

Now the center tie is a bit different in that it gathers either one or two curtains and then proceeds to bind them together at the vertical center of the window, and this is about 2/3 or ¾ of the distance from the bottom to the top.

There’s also the crisscross tie that starts with two overlapping panels that hang the full width of the window. You’ll be pulling the outer panel back to one side, and then the inner curtain is pulled to the opposite side.

Curtains are a varied aspect of the homes interior and can come all different types and styles. One of the ways that all types of curtains are classified is either as informal or formal, no matter the length or color of the fabric.

The more formal type of window is often called a drapery, and will be hung in layers. These are usually found in sitting rooms or living rooms of the home, as well as formal dining rooms. The formal treatments are usually made in two to three layers. The first of the layers is what’s known as the sheer, which is usually a single layered sheer linen or lace, and this will usually let in a diffused amount of light into the room. This layer usually is meant to make murky the visibility from outside.

Next is the pleated floor length drapes. These are hung from a traverse rod, and are meant to cover the side casing and trim of the window frame. Next is the valance that runs along the top of the window, usually only covering a small portion of the window from the top down.

Anything else is just an informal curtain, which are usually just a one or two layer type of window covering, which are meant to be mostly functional, with some decorative style as well, and to simply diffuse the sunlight, not to block it out all together like many drapes.

The magazine writer George Davidsberg is really passionate about news similar to window coverings. You might come across his observations on curtains at http://www.curtains-drapes-coverings.com and other sources for curtains news.

Learn How to Build a Home Rock Climbing Wall

Building a rock climbing wall can be a great way to get a workout and prepare yourself for climbing before going out to do the real thing. Many climbers use their home rock-climbing wall to build strength and practice new moves. Home walls are also great for power training because you can go back and climb some more after you have recovered. There are four steps to building a rock-climbing wall.

First step

Planning your rock climbing wall. During this step you will decide exactly what you want out of your rock climbing wall. Do you want the wall inside or outside? What shapes, features and size do you want your wall to be? You will also want to begin drawing out the type of wall you want and begin to develop an estimate of how much your wall is going to cost.

Second step

Designing your wall. During the design you will begin to calculate exactly how much the wall will cost and exactly what supplies you will need. The technicalities will also be worked out here. You will begin to figure your specific cut angles, your framework, joints and other important features of your wall. You will also need to clear any technical problems that may arise. Here you will need to decide what kind of effects the elements will have on your wall if it is outside. Will your wall suffer from being rained or snowed on? One way to sustain the life of your wall is to use marine board. This is more expensive but if you live in a rainy area, you will find the board to be well worth it.

Third step

The fun part of building your wall. If you enjoy building this will be the best part of building your home rock-climbing wall. The reality of your wall will slowly come to life through this process.

Fourth step

Is the finishing of the wall. We’re not quite cranking the holds on just yet, but we’re getting close. This phase involves the finishing of the wall surface, paint, and applying texture. You will also need to consider what your fallzone is going to be. Are you going to have padding such as mattresses or gym pads? Or would you like to go more natural such as soft wood chips that are used on playgrounds.

After your wall has been finished, you can begin to crank your holds on and build your routes. If the wall is outside, be prepared for your bolts to rust over. If you don’t plan on rearranging holds very often, you will typically not have much to worry about. If you do want to move holds around, it may be difficult unscrew them once they have become rusted. You can also find holds pretty cheap if you hit your local wall climbing gyms. Many times they replace their old holds and will give you or sell you their old holds at a pretty low price. You may also be able to find holds from manufacturers that are clearing out old styles.

Once you get your wall up, you will be excited and climb everyday. There will come a time when you get used to the wall and it’s not as thrilling as it was once before. Keep yourself motivated by adding to the wall and developing new routes. The more challenges you can give yourself the more apt you are to continue training on your wall.

Climb strong climb safe

Kitchen Floor Designs

Floor designs are an important aspect of kitchen modeling that has to be given its due importance when planning. It is the area that is used roughly on a regular basis as it takes the brunt of the walking and moving around. It is advisable to give some forethought to the floor designing before implementing it, as any future alterations and modifications prove to be more difficult and expensive.

It has been noted that although buyers feel an attraction towards Italian tiles and other hard floorings, they are happier walking on softer surfaces. Floors that have padded carpeting and laminating offer softer surfaces to walk on. It is also advisable to choose neutral and light colors for floor surfaces, as they generally don't clash with any furnishings. It is beneficial to weigh the cost against the benefit ratio when going in for particular flooring. It is also advisable to install kitchen flooring, before installing any of the appliances and equipment.

The modern theory is to install earth-friendly flooring. This is flooring that is eco friendly and do not involve any artificial products. It is noted that upscale market buyers who have the money and the inclination for environment friendly floorings are known to go in for cork and bamboo flooring. This flooring is nature friendly as also easily renewable.

Cork is made from the bark of oak trees and are available for flooring. They are very soft under the feet and also acts as a good sound barrier. Bamboo looks very appealing, with its natural colors of brown to tans, and adds beauty and grace to the kitchen floor. Painting Picket Fences

A fence could serve several purposes. For one thing, it also serves as your first line of protection against intruders or strangers. Fences also mark your land territory. They can also confine your pets and children within your property. And then of course, fences add beauty to your place, or even totally transform the appearance of your home.

Lighting Trends in Home Design

If you want to keep up with the latest trends in home design and lighting you should probably go beyond the usual standards, ignore all the advice given to you by professional interior designers and go for a personal style. At least this is the latest trend.

With so many models, coming in all possible sizes and shapes, people find it easier to opt for a personal style when decorating the interiors of their residences, at least when it comes to lighting fixtures. This phenomenon has a simple explanation: the use of light is no longer reduced to simple illumination purposes, but goes further than this status towards self-expression, mood lighting, accent lighting, architectural lighting and even landscape lighting.

The choice of lighting products is increasing also due to the various lighting technologies that bring different advantages to the consumers and are used in different applications. If light fixtures designers are living a moment of glory, lighting designers are facing a real dilemma; clients prefer to choose the lighting fixtures alone and employ light technicians to mount them. This doesn't mean that lighting design is a profession doomed to be outshone! It's probably just a phase until consumers realize that only a professional designer can create a interrelated structure between illumination, structural design and interior decoration.

But most of the users still choose the lighting fixtures alone and their choices vary between three "root-styles": elegant, traditional and contemporary. The average consumers choose their light sources based on price (cheaper are winning), but some take into consideration other factors as well and the most important is energy efficiency. Although energy efficient luminaries are more expensive, they help cut back electricity consumption. You probably already have in your home a reading lamp with dimmer switch or other light sources of the kind. Dimming the light is one way to cut back costs but it also saves energy and extends lamp life. Compact-fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are also very popular choices.

Lighting is not used solely overhead, as it used to be. Today light sources can be used to create a mysterious atmosphere, to enhance the mood of a room or to spotlight an artwork. When it comes to mood lighting, there's nothing better than concealed light sources to highlight a painting or backlights to generate a warm glow behind curtains or pieces of furniture. When it comes to mounting the lights in their homes people become more and more creative. Nowadays it's almost usual to see special lighting effects on the walls of the living room, as usual as it is to see dimmers and solar garden lamps.

Consumers react differently to lighting and lighting objects. Some even buy based on "I like it" more then on "I need it". Let's face it: do you really need a LED cube with a wooden frame to impress your guests or a mood light panel to relax? Not really. But this type of lighting products sells like crazy nowadays and a the trend will probably grow.

Colorful Spring Gardens

In the spring, while trees and shrubs are still showing their pale green new growth, the early border generally consists of colorful bulbs and a few early blooming perennials against a backdrop of green foliage and brown earth. Spring bulbs are perhaps the most important flower in the early spring garden. Spring bulbs, a welcome sight after a long winter, offer the earliest blooms of all garden flowers. Some bulbs will last until the early perennials begin to bloom in May and June.

There are also some early blooming shrubs which can provide the garden with colorful flowers. Forsythia and witch-hazel, for example, bloom long before many perennials even begin to emerge from the soil. In fact, in the middle of spring and early summer there are more shrubs and trees in bloom than at any other time of year.

Most early blooming perennials are quite suitable for the shade garden. They're able to take advantage of the sun while it still reaches the ground beneath deciduous trees which have yet to form their leaves. Woodland gardens are often the most colorful landscapes in the spring since many native, shade tolerant flowers bloom early in the season.

A great early blooming perennial for the garden is iris which ranges in color from white to purple and in size from a few inches to 4 feet. Bleeding heart is a short lived yet stunning pink blooming perennial which is at home in both the shade garden the woodland garden. Columbine, an easy to grow perennial, blooms in a variety of colors. Some of the showiest early season flowers include poppy and peony and lupine.

Though there are many early blooming garden plants, green is still the dominant color in the spring landscape so choose a few plants with interesting foliage. Hosta grows in many shades of green including blue-green and gold-green. Hosta forms the perfect backdrop for spring flowers. Evergreens provide the garden with beautiful shades of green year-round. Variegated foliage, like that of the emerald and gold euonymus, brightens up the garden with a mix of light and dark colors.

Spring bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, blue bells and crocuses, are planted in the fall and blooms as early as March. Bulbs are a very versatile flower as they're suitable for the perennial garden, the shrub bed or even for planting in the lawn. They're most effective when planted in masses so plant quite a few in each area.

Early blooming perennials are generally short lived and often quickly lose their lush green foliage (poppies & lupine in particular). Plan your flower garden so that annuals and later season perennials are ready to take over and provide the garden with colorful blooms. Be sure to deadhead the perennials as the flowers fade. Deadheading is the process of snipping spent blooms off a plant.

Designing your garden on paper before digging gives you a helpful guide while you plant. Though early flowers are welcoming sure signs of spring, be sure to incorporate all kind of flowers in the garden so there's continuous bloom from spring to fall.

It all depends on what you put into your window treatments and the colors that you choose.

Make sure that the window treatments that you use serve the function that you want them to. You want to set the tone and allow the light to come in to your room. Due to their adjustability and durability you can make them work for you and set up what you want with their versatility.

When doing the task of interior decorating there is so much that you need to take into consideration. Many times the window is the first place to start with when designing and updating a room that you are working on. The first thing that needs to be looked when designing a room and the window is deciding on the style and type of window treatment that you want to incorporate with the room and its theme.

Make sure that when you pick a treatment for your windows that it is both visually and aesthetically appealing to you and whoever may come into that room. Pick a color that fits the theme and you want the room to be centered on or you can go with a simple white blind that you will be able to coordinate everything with. Interior Shutters To Let Life In

Have you ever considered the use of interior shutters to enhance the look of your home or even one room in your home to make the room better and more appealing to both you and the your guests. These are things that you can do as updates or it can be something that you consider with your home design. Everyone wants to increase the value of their home. And this can easily be done with either of these window treatments. Between the two of them there are so many different options and things to consider that the common person may be completely overwhelmed if they do not receive help in doing this.

There are many treatment options that need to be considered just in these two items alone. You have color, size, style, shape and of course cost. That may be the biggest factor of all. However do not be afraid to go to your local home improvement store and look around to get ideas. Then you can go to one of the attendants and ask them to help you out together a package that will best fit all of your needs. Do not forget to think about which and how many windows you want to do this to. You also need to think about if all will be the same or if you will have a variation in each room, or if each room will have its own personality.

Remember that it is your house and you can design it any way that you like, especially if you are building a new home. So make sure to confer with the builder and contractor so that you can determine what it is you will need to do and what they will be leaving for you as far as window treatments are concerned. Make it what you want and show off what you can do and design. Remember it is your house. However if you are doing this in an effort to shorten market time and increase sales revenue from the house, then look into simpler easy to follow plans that invite creativity and will give the new owner a head start on what it is that they will be doing with their new home.

Creating Japanese Gardens

Japanese gardens create landscapes which resembles nature through the careful placement of trees, shrubs, rocks, sand, artificial hills, ponds, and water. Zen and Shinto traditions have greatly influenced Japanese gardening and as a result the gardens are contemplative and serene spaces. It is essential that all the elements work well together within the garden and that the relationship between rocks, plants and water is well thought out.

The basic landscape elements found in most Japanese gardens include trees, shrubs, rocks, gravel, water, moss, stones and fences. Boulders are often used as centerpieces and provide the garden with a feeling of stability. Gravel is used to imitate the flow of water and other small stones are used to create boundaries and are turned into sculptural lanterns. Water, whether it be in the form of a pond, stream, or waterfall, is an essential part of a Japanese garden. It can be actual water or a symbolic representation, either way, it is vital to the Japanese garden.

In Japanese gardening there are three basic ways to create a landscape scene. The first of these is reduced scale. Reduced scale is the art of taking an actual scene from nature, mountains, rivers, trees, and all, and reproducing it on a smaller scale. Symbolization is abstract and could include using white sand to symbolize water and boulders to symbolize islands. Borrowed views refers to the use of distant a landscapes, such as a mountain, and incorporating it into the garden.

There are several types of Japanese gardens. Zen garden are meant to be viewed rather than entered. They are comprised of a mix of boulders, gravel or sand, moss and a limited number of trees an shrubs. Carefully placed stones symbolize islands while the gravel or sand, raked into interesting patterns, symbolizes water. Zen gardens help clear the mind and aid in contemplation.

Another type of Japanese garden is the tea garden. The tea garden is considered a ceremonial space which consists of an outer garden and an inner garden. Tea gardens are small and are ideal for those gardens with limited space. The outer garden is informal and consists of an entry gate to and a stone path leading toward the inner garden. Another stone path flows through the inner garden, whose plants are more formally placed. The inner path leads to a small building where the actual tea ceremony is performed.

Another garden appropriate for a small space or patio is the courtyard garden. The design of the Japanese courtyard garden is kept simple and is usually built to be observed from inside the house. It could, however, be planned so it is a useable outdoor space. Consisting of a few plants, a small water feature, a dry stream, or other simple elements, the Japanese courtyard garden allows nature and light to flow into your home through large windows and patio doors.

The above examples are just a few Japanese garden styles. Before designing and planting your own garden, look through some garden books and search for photos of Japanese gardens online. Japanese gardens are intended to create a meditative and relaxing experience. A little planning and research will help you design a serene and beautiful landscape which will delight all who visit your garden.

Interior Concrete Waterproofing: Protect Your Concrete Against Water Damage

Moisture is a major enemy of concrete. It can weaken concrete, make it crack and in general cause deterioration of any concrete structure. Moisture can also cause staining and fungus that is nearly impossible to remove. Interior concrete waterproofing can help prevent moisture damage of this type.

Before you apply any type of interior concrete waterproofing you should first make sure any leakage or drainage problems are corrected. Just because you apply waterproofing doesn’t mean water won’t occur in the area. If landscape drainage problems or leaks aren’t fixed, you’ll still have water pooling on the treated concrete.

Interior concrete waterproofing is a sealing method that can be used on poured concrete, concrete blocks and even on stone foundations. Interior concrete waterproofing can be used on new and old concrete alike. For the best protection you should seal concrete right after the curing stage.

Interior Concrete Waterproofing

The sealant you use should protect against water, water vapor, and radon. To waterproof properly you may have to apply more than one coat of sealant, usually at least two. Read the manufacturer directions carefully before applying your brand of sealer.

Make sure to thoroughly clean and dry all concrete before you apply any interior concrete waterproofing. For existing concrete surfaces such as in a basement, all old paint or adhesive that might have been used on the floor must be removed before it can be waterproofed. The areas to be treated should be as clean as possible and free of any mold or mildew.

If you want to waterproof concrete foundation walls they must be cured for about a month. Sealants will keep cracks, holes or defects in concrete foundation walls from receiving moisture as well. For best water protection, it is usually recommended to seal both sides of the wall, using an exterior coating on the outside.

Foundation Repair Indications

If you are a homeowner you probably already know the signs of a potential foundation problem. At the first sign of damage you should immediately have it inspected by a trained professional. Delaying action could cause the value of your home to significantly be reduced due to the damage. Or ever worse, completely lose your home all together and have it declared uninhabitable. There are many different signs of potential problems. You will be able to see it from both outside and inside your home.

Exterior Signs:

There are certain obvious signs you will be able to see from looking at the outside of your house. For instance, having doors that do not close properly, as well as having gaps in between the garage door and pavement at either side of the garage door could be an early indication that you may have foundation damage.

Other indications include seeing cracks in the walls at the corners of doors and windows, as well as cracks in bricks and mortars. If you see one or more of these signs on your home you should seek professional help as soon as possible.

Interior Signs:

You might also be able to see signs of possible foundation damage inside your home. If you notice that all of a sudden your floors are no longer even, or if you see large cracks in the concrete slabs it is quite possible that you have damage. Other indications include having gaps in your kitchen cabinets, as well as having leaks and cracks in and around your fireplace. Seeing these signs in your home indicates that something may be wrong, which should not be ignored.

Even though some of these damages may simply be cosmetic in nature and not necessarily structural, you will never know unless you have it inspected by a professional trained to assess these types of damages.

Residential Foundation Repair

One of the worse problems a homeowner can experience is damage to the foundation of their home. This type of problem can be very expensive in the long run, not to mention very inconvenient for you and your family. Sadly, this is a very common problem for homeowners whose homes are constructed on clay soil.

How to find out if you have foundation problems

If you suspect that you may have a potential problem with your foundation you should immediately have a plumber come in and inspect your pipes and sewer lines for leaks. The results you get from these inspections will be very helpful to any foundation specialists you may hire to look into your situation.

Calling several foundation repair specialists to inspect your home will be your next step. These specialists will look into contributing factors to potential cracks, as well as interior measurements. Once they have completed their inspection they will then give you a report of their findings you will be able to understand, as well as estimates for the cost of repair.

How to repair the problem

You should never attempt to fix foundation damage on your own. These types of problems should always be left to professionals who are specially trained to handle these types of situations.

Upgrading the support structure of your home is the only way to fix foundation problems. The type of support you will use will depend on many different factors. You will use different support structures with different types of soils. The depth of the support piers will also depend on the type of soil that is underneath your home. These piers come in many different sizes and length. It will be your job to hire a contractor that will know which type to use for your specific situation. In any case, you should never rely on the opinion of one source. Asking for a second opinion from a professional engineer will prove to be very beneficial for you.

Office Buildings

Office buildings over the year have evolved from simple commercial properties housing enterprises into sophisticated work places with modern gadgetry. Increasing competition and globalization have resulted in an unprecedented boom as far as office buildings and spaces go. If you are looking for a good commercial property to lease or sub lease, it is a must that you have a checklist before you select the right kind of office space.

You should thoroughly analyze your requirements literally inside out before zeroing in on the correct choice. This will save valuable time and energy. Once you have an assessed exactly your needs, which to a lot of extents depends on your budget, make sure you prioritize your checklist.

You need to consider the overall amount of space that you will need, for instance. For example, you may need a small office ranging up to 200 sq. ft. A slightly bigger enterprise might require over 1000 sq. ft. In case you are looking to set up a store, then certainly you will need lots of space. So, it all depends ultimately on your requirements.

Next in line is the crucial factor of affordability. Prices for office buildings usually are based on a cost per square foot basis. The costs may vary depending on the building's location and its neighborhood. Location plays an important part in office buildings. A location in the commercial hubs of major cities is always preferred. Sometimes certain locations have their own "feel" among them. If you want your company to rub shoulders with global giants, then you will have to spend on an office building in a prime location.

You should also to check out for the required ambience in an office space. An interior designing firm, for instance, may need a different ambience then a stock broker's firm. You need to check out on various other factors like the car parking space and safety aspects of an office building, before arriving at a final conclusion. Once you are clear in your goals vis-à-vis your office space, selecting a good office building becomes a relatively easy job.

The Toy Room: A Great Room for Children And Parents

Every child needs a special, magical place: a corner of the world (or at least the house) where he can escape, have fun, and rule his tiny kingdom. And this place is the toy room.

Why You Need a Toy Room

There are many benefits to having a designated Toy Room in the house. The first, and perhaps the most convincing argument, is that the sense of ownership—“this is my space, with my things”—helps develop a child’s security and self esteem. Just put yourself in your child’s shoes. He’s smaller than everyone else, the grown ups set the rules, and the world seems like such a big place with scary and unfamiliar things and experiences. But the toy room becomes his sanctuary. He is surrounded by everything he loves, and has complete control over what happens within the walls of the toy room. Does he play with the blocks or the ball? Will he read a book or paint? Nobody can tell him what to do. Child psychologists also believe that a toy room can help him become more independent, since it encourages him to make small but simple decisions without mom and dad hovering over his shoulder.

For parents, the toy room is an enclosed, designated area where they can leave the child and not worry about his safety. This leaves them free to attend to chores or get a precious half hour of “me time”.

How to Set up a Toy Room

-Make sure that the Toy Room is completely child-proof, especially if you cannot see the child from where you will be staying. Windows should be securely locked (you can buy clips or window guards). If you have Venetian blinds, make sure that the cords are tied well above the child’s reach (they can get strangled on them). Wall sockets must have plastic protectors. Other common hazards are: exposed cords, breakables, and sharp table corners. -Invest in a baby monitor for small children. It’s best if you can hear them if they cry—just so can quickly check that they haven’t gotten hurt.

-Choose furniture (tables and chairs, cabinets, book shelves, or coat racks) that are specifically designed for your child’s age and size. They can climb on a tall adult’s and then crash down to the floor, or slip while trying to reach a book on a shelf that’s too high. -If your child’s older and able to follow instructions, give simple toy room safety rules. Better yet, remove anything that would possibly cause danger beyond his ability to control himself. For example, instead of saying “Don’t run around with the sharp scissors” give him specially designed scissors for kids.

Toy Room Furniture

-Toy chest. Keep small toys organized and out of the way to avoid slipping. If your child has a lot of toys, try breaking them into groups and then rotating them. Not only is this neater, it prevents a small child from becoming overwhelmed (and when you bring out an old toy that he hasn’t seen in a long time, he’ll treat it like it’s brand new!)

-Book shelves. Encourage a love for reading by keeping books readily accessible. Make reading a special bonding moment as well—snuggle together to read aloud a favorite fairytale!

-Table and chair. A child needs a table for writing, drawing, and other activities that need a bare and elevated surface: putting together puzzles, crafting, playing with clay, or the impromptu teddy bear tea party. Make sure that the table and chair at the right height, and that he doesn’t need to slouch over or arch his shoulders to reach the table.

-Art easel. Drawing, painting and other creative activities encourage imagination and creativity, and help strengthen the hand muscles for writing. (Did you know that many pre-schoolers have trouble keeping up at school just because they don’t like writing?).

Other optional toy room furniture are tents (for hide and seek play), sleeping mats (for nap times and sleep overs), and clothes racks for jackets.

Classic Toys for your Toy Room

There are traditional toys without which no toy room could ever be considered complete. Be sure to stock up on these classics—and keep a spare copy of your child’s favorite toy in case it gets broken or lost!

Balls. If you’re worried about your child throwing it around and breaking something in the toy room, have “indoor balls” that are smaller and made of light weight materials like foam. Balls develop hand eye coordination and are one of the few toys that are more fun when shared (great for play dates).

Dolls and stuffed animals. These toys are not only comforting and fun to hug, but are handy for imaginative play. Why not treat your child to a beautiful doll house?

Crayons, paper, and other art materials. If you’re worried that your child will scrawl on the walls of your beautifully decorated toy room, buy special “washable” crayons that can be easily wiped off with water.

Blocks. Stack them up into cities or kingdoms. With a little imagination your child can also use them in conjunction with toys and dolls.

Puzzles. These help develop logic and spatial reasoning…not to mention patience! Choose puzzles that are appropriate for your child’s age and skill, since getting something too complex will only discourage him.

Decorating your Toy Room

Now even the busiest parents can easily decorate a toy room. There are coordinated furniture sets for quite a number of themes, from a princess toy room in a charming pastel pink to a colorful zoo toy room for children who love animals. Just by selecting the right pieces, and choosing a complementing color for the walls, your toy room has that happy, “pulled together” look—even if you didn’t hire an interior designer! Complete the design with sticker decals, themed beddings, matching accessories (like lamps and curtains), and your child’s own art work. Wouldn’t that be a toy room that anyone would be proud of?

Eight Ways to Add Value to Your Home

Two story brick traditional with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, island kitchen, and large deck! Sound familiar? We often talk about houses in terms of room count, along with a list of finishes, such as tile floors, granite counters, or faux paint. While this vocabulary conveys certain facts, it does not provide the tools to think about how to re-design a house in a fabulous way.

It is valuable to be able to make the decisions that transform a poor design into a house that is memorable, enduring, and widely appealing. To do this we need to go deeper than simply updating finishes or increasing square footage. We must think about how the structure shapes the feelings and experience of its inhabitants. In the words of Winston Churchill, "We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us." When a house has design flaws, we know intuitively that it does not feel right. On the other hand, a well designed house can make us feel inspired, enriched, and touched by a sense of order.

We often see houses that have some elements in the structure and site that appeal to us, but cannot be lived in without remodeling. Often our clients say that they want to find a house with good bones (meaning good basic design), that they can update. The truth is that most houses have some good design and some bad design. Painting walls and updating fixtures will not cover bad design. You will need to think about the house in a deeper way. Use these design processes to help you make the difficult decisions that will result in a house that many people would love to live in.

1. Relate the house to the site.

Think about how the house integrates and interacts with the land around it. This awareness is a basic, but often ignored, beginning. The connection and interplay between interior and exterior spaces enhances both in a powerful way.

Manage the views from each window. Is there an undesirable view into a neighbor's home or yard? Is there a nice view that is blocked by a wall or fireplace?

Notice how the walkway leads to the street, where privacy is needed, where noise buffering is needed, how drainage will work.

A side area could be a private garden, accessible from the main bedroom. A front porch overlooking the street could bring the house into a relationship with the neighborhood.

2. Bring in natural light.

Houses can be transformed by adding windows and other light sources. Generous light feels safe and uplifting, and attracts people toward it.

Natural light raises the level of importance and the beauty of rooms. Light all main rooms from two sides, if possible, to reduce glare and balance the light. Use glass doors, windows, skylights, transoms, or light tunnels.

Keep passive solar techniques in mind as you add windows and shading devices. The control of solar energy for light and heat is fundamental for an efficient and comfortable home.

3. Break down hard barriers between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Glass doors, screens, and walls that slide open can create semi-transparent walls, forming indoor/outdoor spaces that have enormous appeal.

Breezeways, garden rooms, bay windows, and screened porches are spaces that people love. These bring people into contact with the outdoors, yet may be furnished in a comfortable way.

4. Think of outdoor spaces as large rooms.

When all areas of the site are thought of as living spaces, new ideas open up. These outdoor spaces expand the house by creating a sense of semi-enclosure in various ways.

Their edges can be defined by trees, fences, wings of the house or other buildings. For example, an outdoor room may be a shady natural space on the site enclosed by a line of trees and shrubs.

Outdoor living spaces can be courtyards, walled gardens, trellis covered breezeways, stone patios, or outdoor showers. Think about their use and connectedness to the house.

Often, we see an exterior space that is built as an isolated destination place - a second floor deck, for example. If you have to make an effort to go there, the space will not be used. Outdoor spaces are most used when they are on paths used by people coming and going. This is why a front porch is a very appealing design element. People naturally meet here, and the porch connects with neighbors walking by.

A popular outdoor living area is the backyard deck. This is often seems to be an afterthought, tacked onto the house. Can it be covered and screened?

5. Consider widening roof overhangs or adding propped shutters over windows.

This is a green building technique in warm climates, blocking solar penetration.

The view of the outside roof structure seen from inside the house evokes a sense of shelter and protection.

If possible, extend the roof in some areas to create covered porches or breezeways. Rooms that are simultaneously open and protected are very appealing.

Inside the house, exposed rafters, rustic beams, or wood surfaces on the ceiling create feelings of strength and character in the home.

6. Review traffic flow - a crucial, but often ignored, design element.

Walk down the paths that bring you inside the front door, then lead you to various rooms through the house, and again to the outdoors. Do they cut through the middle of living areas? When this happens the living area will never feel complete and comfortable.

Circulation paths should lead along the edges of main rooms, and efficiently to private rooms. A maze like floorplan creates a sense of wasted energy and confusion. Few exterior doors may result in a subtle feeling of being trapped.

Bring multiple uses to hallways and connecting spaces with bookshelves, windows or window seats.

Set apart the main entrance with details such as a covered place to stand, special doors, benches, or potted plants.

7. Compare the sizes of rooms in proportion to each other.

People have an intuitive sense of the correct hierarchy of spaces. Small living spaces will seem wrong when combined with large bedrooms.

Homes with awkward design can often be improved by removing walls to make one large space from several smaller ones.

Consider the use and function of each room. Is the room to be used privately, such as a bedroom, study, or library? Or, will the family gather here to cook and eat informally? Some houses include formal areas, others do not. Some have many rooms, others are very open. There is no right or wrong decision here. Houses that have a true and intuitive appeal have a clarity as to the function of each room.

8. Choose materials as an integral part of the design - not as decorator selections made at the end.

For example, structural materials can be exposed, or flooring can be used to connect and unify spaces.

Bring in the beauty and texture of natural materials. Use materials that offset each other - warm and cool colors, rough and smooth textures, solid and delicate walls.

Use materials to connect the house to the site - for example, a wood clad house surrounded by woods, or a stone house next to outcroppings of stone. Or, connect the house to the neighborhood with historic colors and siding.

Repeat materials and colors to unify the interior and exterior.

Bedding Ideas for Better Bedrooms

So many folks settle for the bog-standard bedroom layout, but there really is so much more that can be done to improve the room we spend a third of our lives in. When it comes to bedding ideas, most of us know that bedding and accents are important, but there is one key area of bedroom design that is so often overlooked. What am I talking about? The flooring!

The floor space on so many bedrooms gets neglected all too often, and it's a shame because with some carefully chosen bedroom ideas for the floor, you really can transform your bedrooms. For example, floor pillows are a great choice for the bedroom since they are soft and fluffy, like your bedding and bed pillows. Why not try and do something a little different with your bedroom layout this time.

You don't need a degree in interior design in order to make some great changes to both the look and feel of your sleeping zone. You can embellish your bedroom with a contemporary flair by making a few simple alterations such as a couple of paintings, or other wall decorations, and coordinating your bedding and pillows to enhance your room with a modern design.

If you use neutral colors on the walls, it's easier to alter the bedding and bedroom furniture without the need to redecorate. Try to use colors for your bedding that complement the seasons. That way, you'll get to have at least 2 looks a year depending where you live in the world.

Another suggestion is to come up with a bedroom design that's planned around coordinated bedding set. These days folks are constantly in search of things that will somehow simplify and beautify our cluttered lives, and the bedding ensemble can do just that if chosen with care.

When you think about it, so much has changed in the world of bedding over the past couple of decades that many people find it hard to keep up with all the changes, but one thing that seems to be on the increase in simplistic designs, and in particular, Feng Shui. Put simply, Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of positioning objects in rooms so that they will achieve harmony, comfort, and balance into your life.

Bedding and bedroom ideas practiced around Feng Shui say that the bed should not be placed so that your feet face a doorway, as this is apparently the way the deceased are carried from a room. Neither should your bed directly face a window as the glare attracts Sha energy. Also, there should be no more than two mirrors placed in a bedroom as this will excite Chi. Also, avoid placing a mirror at the foot of the bed or opposite a window.

There are many rules and suggestions on the simplicity and art of Feng Shui for bedrooms and you will find an abundance of material on the subject should you wish to look into it further.

So there we have it. Bedding ideas are not just about sheets and pillows but about cushions, soft furnishings and fabrics around or over furniture. With a little imagination and a couple of hours to spare, you could transform both the look and feel of you bedroom without even looking at a tin of paint.

Maintaining Stone Floors

There are many variables which must be considered when designing a maintenance programme for stoneware in interiors. These include physical properties of the stone, abrasion risk, hostile factors in the environment, the maintenance budget and skill of the maintenance personnel.

MARBLE

Since marble absorbs oils and other liquids, is easily scratched and is acid-sensitive, the surface should be cleaned with natural soap or neutral pH detergent. Polished marble is ideal for vertical application but requires a high level of maintenance when used as flooring, especially in high-traffic situations. Non-reflective finishes perform well as flooring, with minimal maintenance required, once treated with recommended sealers. Marbles used in kitchens need extra care due to oil absorption.

LIMESTONE

Most limestone varieties are semi-metamorphic and will have physical properties similar to metamorphic marble. Non-reflective finishes are practical as flooring but require sealing to minimise stains. Dense, low absorbent varieties of limestone can be suitable in shower areas but beware of using too soft a limestone in high stress areas. Sealing is normally recommended for both interior and exterior locations. Limestone absorbs oil and water easily and should be washed with natural soap and soft detergent.

GRANITE

Granite is typical for kitchen counter use. Granite is the hardest of the polished stones commercially available and is used in high stress situations. Polished granite is usually more absorbent to liquids.

Flamed granite surfaces are very absorbent due to the stress fractures in the stone caused by the flaming process and should be sealed if one wants to maintain the original colour and appearance of the stone for a long period.

SLATE

Cleft slate is very durable in most situations but the quality varies. Slate is typically rustic in appearance but some milled or smooth products are available too. Acrylics are used when a highly reflective finish is desired.

Many imported slates are available today with wide ranging physical characteristics and overall suitability. Evaluate your stone for density, tensile strength, absorbency and abrasion resistance. Wash with pure soap and soft detergent.

The Role Of Our Home Air Conditioner And Heater

In terms of maximizing our comfort in our own homes – something we go to great lengths to achieve – the proper functioning of our air conditioner and heater is paramount to our success. Determining, and ensuring, the maximum efficiency of these systems first depends on understanding their operation.

We all know that our home air conditioner and heater are used to adjust our interior temperature. The air conditioner lowers the temperature in the home so that we are comfortable in warmer weather; in contrast, the heater is used to elevate the temperature in the home so that we are comfortable in colder weather. But the air conditioner and heater also play roles in moderating humidity within the home subsequently affecting our comfort level.

Humidity is defined by the level of moisture in the air. Humidity can vastly affect our comfort level; as a point of reference, the human body positively responds to a relative humidity level between 20% and 60%. When the outside temperature is between 20°F and 70°F, the humidity level within in our homes is generally within this comfort level. But in more extreme temperatures, the humidity level – along with the temperature – inside our homes must be modified to maximize comfort.

When using the air conditioner and heater, humidity levels will also adjust accordingly. However, when the humidity level drops too low, those inside the home will often complain of dryness of the skin, irritation of their throat and eyes, and overall discomfort. Most people, in an effort to maximize comfort, will use a humidifier along with their air conditioner and heater. A humidifier will keep the humidity level consistent in the home.

The modern air conditioner and heater allows us to be completely comfortable no matter what the temperature outside. The humidifier, added to these conveniences, can take your comfort to the next level.

Metal Pallets

With the boom in the technology industry, one can safely assume that there ought to be a rise in the level of durability, sophistication and efficiency of a product. Metal pallets have proven this very assumption for the pallet industry. With the huge proportion of investment, which is made in the metallurgical industry, there are a large number of alloys, which are not only far stronger and more durable than wood or plastic, but are also by far more dependable than their counterparts.

If you are one of those people who have used plastic or wooden pallets then you are sure to know that these pallets are not only very expensive, but there is always a fear of the pallets themselves cracking up or being contaminated. With metal pallets you need not have any such worries, as these are not only extremely cost effective but there is also no question of them breaking up. There is even no fear of contamination as you can always galvanize them.

One also need not worry about designing metal pallets according to the different kinds of weights that it might have to carry. All kinds of metal pallets are extremely strong and they can carry almost any amount of weight. Another great thing about metal pallets is the fact that once bought they can be used repeatedly and unlike wooden pallets, they are not damaged in just one trip. In fact, there is no end to the number of times you may use a metal pallet. This aspect has proved to be extremely beneficial and economical to many. Some of the metal pallets available in the market can last for more than 15 years. You are not even required to repair or maintain these pallets to keep them in good working order. Also, there is very little cost in keeping the pallet producing plant clean as the process of manufacturing metal pallets is not as messy as that of manufacturing wooden or plastic pallets.

It is very important to be informed about the different kinds of pallets available in the market and then make an educated choice.

Wooden Pallets

Wooden pallets are basically strong and rigid platforms. They are primarily used to provide support to various goods that are required to be shipped from one place to another, thus, avoiding any possible damage to the goods. A number of people might be surprised to know that the wooden pallet industry itself is an extremely crucial part of the American economy. The number of pallets used every day, that is the daily requirement of wooden pallets is a staggering 2 billion. The reason for this overwhelming figure is probably the universality of the requirement of the product. These pallets are used not just for packing, but also for stacking goods safely before they are lifted up.

Many people share the misconception that the paper industry is the largest consumer of wood. If you are one of these people then you will be extremely surprised to know that it is actually the wooden pallets industry that is the world's largest consumer of wood.

Not all pallets look alike as they are all meant to serve different purposes. They are basically designed according to the amount of weight they are required to carry, or other specifications that a particular user might be looking for in the pallets that he or she wants to use. However, the most important requirement that needs to be kept in mind while designing the pallets is the kind of forklifting device that will be used for lifting the goods packed with the pallets.

You can easily find pallets online or you may order them from a store in your block. Wooden pallets can be bought for about $8 to $10. If you are buying a reconditioned one then you may strike a fair deal of $4 to $6 for each pallet. But most of the pallets available in the market are good only for a single trip and usually get damaged thereafter.

A quick search online will give you a fair idea about the various dealers of wooden pallets and also give you a brief idea about all that you need to keep in mind while buying these pallets.

Decorative Painting

How To Become Great At Decorative Painting, Faux Finishing, and Venetian Plaster

If you like the color, creativity and moods of faux painted walls, here is an incredible opportunity to learn simple and easy techniques. There are many types of faux finishing: ragging, add/subtract sponging, combing, brushing, glazing, leather-like, suede-like. There are also many popular old world finishes and glazes you can use to decorate the walls and other areas of your home. It's easy to learn simple tricks of the trade and many tips designed to make you look like a professional.

The basic decorative painting principals can be applied anywhere in your home!

The expensive new trend is Venetian Plasters. You can purchase materials at your local hardware stores or splurge and import them directly from the source, Italy. These Italian plasters have been developed for generations dating back to ancient Rome and have most recently become some of the most sought after finishes.

A Venetian Plaster finish can range in sheen and texture from a smooth highly polished marble-like finish to a distressed, stone-like Tuscan appearance. Using actual ground limestone and marble dust in a lime putty, walls can have the authentic feel of stone. You can apply this special plaster in an infinite number of color combinations to coordinate and enhance your décor. Venetian Plaster is applied with a trowel in multiple layers, which determines the color and dimension of the finished wall. The surface is literally a layer of stone more durable than drywall and up to 1/8" thick. The result is an allergy free, mildew resistant, and long lasting durable finish. A very protective and fun solution for those with allergies!

Much like fine red wine, your sealed Venetian Plaster finish will not fade, but will become more beautiful with age, adding to the uniqueness and value of your home or business.

Let's Get It Painted!

Faux finishes are the hottest thing in wall covering since pre-mixed paint in a can. Instead of flat painted linen white, choices can include a soft-sponge cloudy texture in sage greens, or crisp wide stripes in neutral tones, or a scholarly stippling finish in leather browns. The choices are endless and the results can be beautiful when done right. Here are some of the key choices you'll need to make to ensure a great result.

Color: Before choosing the main color, consider: any color other than off-whites that you see on a color chip at the paint store will intensify significantly when painted over an entire wall. For instance, a color chip of light aqua green might appear to be screaming turquoise when applied to a wall. With that in mind, try picking a slightly lighter or more subdued version. For the base color you will need the tint that is 2-3 shades lighter on the color chart.

Add at least 2 layers color for your faux finish. The first layer should be the main color chosen and applied consistently over the walls in the technique desired, making sure to get all the way to the edges of base board, moldings and trim. The second layer of faux finish should be slightly lighter than the first and made from opaque paint. Therefore it will soften the first layer and hide any blemishes. Always keep the differences in the colors suitable and avoid high contrast combinations like the plague (such as royal blue on top of a white base coat). After you've mastered a suitable approach to color choice, try experimenting with complimentary colors such as a golden yellow base coat and light terracotta textured layers on top. Or try a lavender blue base coat with chalk blue "washed" decorative paint finish on top.

PREP TIME

Have you always wanted to faux finish your home but were fearful of the process? Now you can with classic faux finish designs. Before you start it is good to buy Non Toxic Paints and benefit all involved! In the past these paints were not available and could cause harm to the applier/painter. Ask when in question.

Color Wash

This free-form finish is known for its subtle variations of color and natural, soft glow. Supremely versatile, it can be adapted to any living environment - from modern to traditional. It imparts a peaceful, tranquil feeling that adds to the comfort of any room of your home.

How-To Instructions

Prep 1:

Before base coating, make sure your surface is in good condition. Patch holes and cracks with spackling paste, and wash any dirt from surface using a mild soap. Mask all windows, baseboards, and moldings using 2” painter’s tape. Evenly apply paint with roller. Base coat should always be a satin or semi-gloss latex finish. Two coats may be necessary depending on coverage. Let dry 24 hours.

Prep 2:

Before you faux, prepare your glaze/paint mixture(s). A 5:1 ratio (5 parts Faux Like A Pro glaze to 1 part paint) is highly recommended. This ratio will allow you time to work the finish and prevent it from drying too fast.

Step 1:

Colorwash is a wet-on-wet technique in which transparent strokes of color blend together seamlessly. Dip tip of 4" latex brush into glaze A, then apply with long criss-cross strokes, swinging your arm freely from the shoulder. Place strokes randomly, leaving portions of the base coat showing through. Work in 3 sq. ft. areas until each wall is complete. Do not stop in the middle of the wall.

Step 2:

Work over the same area, brushing on glaze B as in step 1, filling in the blank spots, but still leaving hints of the base coat showing through.

Step 3:

While the glaze is still wet, pass over it with a clean, dry, bristle block brush, using powerful sweeping strokes to melt the two colors together. Work your surface until you have achieved a soft cloud like effect.

Step 4:

A badger softening brush can be used as a final step to further soften the surface and eliminate any visible brush strokes. Move the brush in light figure-eight patterns over the entire surface.

Tip 1

When applying colors keep your strokes random, yet balanced. Avoid creating dark blotches of color.

Tip 2

Remember that blending requires long brush strokes and a lot of pressure. This is an energetic process. Keep your upper body free and open, constantly making contact with the wall.

Tip 3

If your finish turns out looking too dark or too bright, you can soften the wall by dry brushing over it with a touch of the base color. Put the base coat into glaze using the 5:1 ratio.

FINAL FINISH

Supplies:

- gallon of glaze
- bristle block brush
- badger hair softener

You will also need the following basic supplies from your local hardware store:

- two 4" latex all purpose brushes
- paint roller
- medium nap roller

- 3" latex cutting brush
- large bucket for water
- 2 containers to hold glaze/paint mixture

Studio Living - The Sleeping Area

A few major questions are whether the bed has to double as another piece of furniture, such as seating, during the day, or whether it can be concealed when not in use. Is privacy in your sleeping area important? Would curtains provide adequate screening, or would you prefer something more substantial? What do you like to keep by your bed? Have you provided for storage of your alarm clock, reading material and so on?

These questions will dictate how you approach the interior design plan for your sleeping area. Always remember a good bed is a necessity. If you are buying a new one, test it thoroughly to make sure it is right for you. All other interior design ideas pale in comparison to having a, comfortable and supportive place to lay your head down after a hard days work.

Keeping that in mind you can start with trying to figure out what and how your sleeping arrangement should be. Fold up beds have the distinct advantage of being able to free up a considerable amount of living space. Beds that fold into the wall are concealed behind a vertical surface that can be used for decorative purposes. The disadvantage of the fold-up bed system is that bedding must be packed away when the bed is not in use, which may prove inconvenient when carried out on a daily basis.

Raised beds are also an ideal space-saving interior design idea. A raised platform can be designed with the idea of making you're your dressing room under it. Custom built wardrobes and bedding storage cupboards can be placed under the platform. Make sure you check all safety aspects are in place, including a sturdy rail and a ladder. There should also be enough headroom between the platform and the ceiling.

A bed can be a very large item and can occupy the most space of all your furniture pieces. Dual-purpose beds are an excellent space-saving item - they can double up as seating or storage - or both - during the day, as well as providing a comfortable place to sit. Multi-functional bench-beds are the latest in interior design concepts. Based on the simple principle of a box with a hinged lid, this space-saving bed is constructed in painted MDF with hardwood legs that can be used as a bench, a display shelf, or as a low table. If you prefer a more fixed type of sleeping arrangement then the elegance of a well-crafted truckle bed might tickle your fancy. The space beneath the bed is ideal for storage - whether in deep drawers, mobile containers, or zipped bags, or for a spare pull-out bed. Unless, of course, you have an antique four poster bed that you wish to feature in your sleeping area. It is then vital that more effort is placed into designing or acquiring other space-saving items to compliment the space, or lack there of.

Studio living can be a very compact lifestyle, consider a furniture system and interior design ideas that allows you to adapt the shape and layout as your life changes. Items should be compact and mobile, yet should not compromise anything in the 'comfy' department.

Studio Living - The Utility Area

Concealed or not, however, stored objects are usable only if they are tidily organized in a practical, modular system. Solutions to storing cleaning equipment range from simple, imaginative interior design ideas to integrated appliances. Industrial systems such as pull-out larder units, which were formerly found only in warehouses and factories, are now being appropriated by the domestic market because they are so practical and use a minimum of materials. Realising your interior design ideas for the utility area does not have to be as mundane as the chores associated with the appliances found in the utility area. Good imaginative ideas can reduce clutter and save space at every turn.

In restricted areas, wire rack and basket systems provide an invaluable and flexible method of storage. They can be fitted into virtually any space, whether under the stairs or on the backs of cupboard doors. They do not collect dust and everything that is stored is easily accessible. Hooks and small containers can be added to extend their storage possibilities. One cheap and cheerful interior design solution to storing smaller items in wire racks is a simple fabric 'shoebag'. Other inexpensive ideas include colourful plastic baskets and stacking boxes.

When looking for areas to utilise as a utility area, wasted space under staircases make for an ideal area to put your interior design ideas into practice. The needs of people living alone or in small studio spaces, has resulted in a new generation of compact washing and drying machines that will fit snugly in these types of small spaces. When teamed with retractable ironing boards and high-level clothes drying rails, these basic services take up little space and may even be concealed entirely from view. Mini washers are designed to sit on a sink drainer and to be put away when not in use.

In the early stages of interior design planning, allocate spaces for cleaning equipment and for clothes drying, as well as for plumbing in a washing machine. These plans are often overlooked but are absolute necessary to ensure daily chores are streamlined and do not become a burden. Proper interior design planning will ensure you have made provision for such items as either a clothes dryer or clothes rack or pulley. If space does not allow for a washing machine and clothes dryer, then a simple rise-and-fall 'pulley' made of plastic-coated steel or natural wood will have to do the job.

Remember, reducing clutter is paramount in your interior design plans. Wall hanging or vertical stacked units will provide the best space-saving solutions. Make sure you utilise hard-to-reach corner spaces under worktops by installing carousel storage trays. When your interior design plans require that construction of units be done, consider using marine plywood. It is an ideal material to use, being impervious to moisture it will hold up well in small badly ventilated kitchens and washing areas.

Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Interior Design

Studio Living - The Washing Area

You can choose from a wide variety of space-saving interior designs - from corner baths and showers to modern sitz baths. Showers are convenient, economical, fast and ideal in restricted studio living spaces. For those that prefer a relaxing bath, a range of ingenious tub designs can be fitted into the most awkward area. Some baths are wider at one end than the other, while others fit neatly across a corner. But when space it extremely limited the corner shower presents the only alternative, as they can be fitted into any corner or incorporated into wardrobe units. Shower panels must be made of toughened safety glass.

Another unique interior design concept for space saving bath units is the sunken unit. The bath can be sunk into the bedroom floor and concealed with a bed that runs on rails. Blinds can be pulled across to create a private bathing experience. Providing a compromise between a bath and a shower when space is limited is the use of a sitz bath. Traditional in design, it takes up little or no space at all and is ideal for very small bathrooms, or even under the stairs.

Always keep in mind when choosing a shower or bath unit that the water pressure and flow rate of your plumbing must be adequate. When planning the interior design of your washing area functionality and space requirements should be at the top of your list. Discuss your interior design thoughts with a qualified plumber and electrician before commencing work. Standards for WC valves vary from country to country, so check that you have the appropriate system. Remember to leave adequate space for movement around each piece of washing area equipment. A good idea that should be incorporated into your interior design ideas is to facilitate space for a ventilation fan to prevent damp and condensation that tends to accumulate much quicker in a small washing area. Unsightly clutter such as pipe-works and cisterns can be hidden behind fitted cupboards and semi-recessed vanity units. When planning a bathroom, consider the benefits of adding a heated towel rail into your interior design concepts.

Basins are also to be included in your designs. They come in an exciting variety of shapes and sizes, as well as being made of different materials, but in small studio living washing areas it is crucial that you select a model that is large enough for your needs yet avoids wasting space. For example, a basin can be wall-hung on brackets or semi-recessed into a cupboard unit, both options allowing for storage space below. Shared space with the toilet unit is one of the most used interior design ideas where the hand basin is mounted on a swivel action above the toilet unit.

To create the appearance of space, it is always advisable to use light colours in your interior design scheme. Good lighting is also an essential element in washing areas that are overly small, however, the use of natural light will always be a better option to try and bring into the placement of your washing area.

The Difference Between Better Living Sunrooms and Patio Rooms

The choice to add a sunroom to your home can be seem overwhelming at first with all the options and various aspects to think of. Going with a reliable product line from a reputable company can be a great way of making sure you get the information you need to make the right decisions when it comes to choosing your sunroom. Better Living is that company. Their knowledge of sunroom, patio, conservatory and awning products started all the way back in 1946- and they have been maintaining an industry lead ever since.

Three Season Sunrooms vs. Four Season Sunrooms

At first glance, many will see that there are various types of products available to them but cannot tell the differences between them. When it comes to sunrooms, there are patio rooms- or what is commonly referred to as ‘three season sunrooms’- and there are ‘four season sunrooms’.

Three season patio rooms are built on top of an already existing patio or deck that is able to withstand the weight and stress of the patio room. These types of rooms are more affordable and easier to install because they do not change or alter the lines of your home. There is no heating or cooling systems or ductwork on a three season patio room. This also cuts down on cost. Patio rooms come with a number of options in the way of screens and glass windows. On lovely spring days you can lift the windows and get a lovely breeze. You can decorate the room into a living space that fits your taste and style to a tee. Furniture, rugs, carpets and other cherished items will be safely protected within the sturdy construction of a Better Living patio room. Better Living patio rooms are constructed with only the highest quality of materials, tempered glass and heavy duty roofs.

If you’re in the market for a fully climate controlled sunroom, then a four season sunroom is exactly what you’re looking for. Outdoor Kitchen Furniture

For many years, outdoor cooking has remained an American passion. They just love cooking outdoors! What changed are the now high-end outdoor kitchen amenities such as refrigerators, space heaters, high-tech gas-fueled grills, and stylish furniture.

Nowadays, you should not find it surprising if outdoor kitchens have become one of the favorite segments in the industry of home improvement. Thus, it is hardly debatable that an outdoor kitchen adds to a home's functionality, value and pleasure for homeowners.

How does one build a practical outdoor kitchen? This article has five simple steps for you:

1. Plan

Like any other endeavor, creating an outdoor kitchen needs critical planning regarding two elements:

a. Location

Normally, outdoor kitchen are built adjacent to the inside kitchen or off the rear of the house. An outdoor kitchen should have a pleasing location and have an easy access to the interior of the house.

For example, you can build an outdoor kitchen on a pre-existing patio or deck and build a combination kitchen patio and/or kitchen deck.

Another thing, you should consider the frequency and nature of usage, that is if for entertainment and/or for recreation, of outdoor kitchen so that the whole layout will make all areas accessible and functional.

Imagination and appropriate layout are the only limits to this element.

b. Budget

Of course, budget accommodation is another crucial element in the planning process. You have to consider that even a modest set-up, which consists of a kitchen island and a pro quality grill, will need an estimate cost of 5,000 dollars.

A helpful tip then is to gradually build your outdoor kitchen. You can spend 7,000 dollars to buy chairs and tables and a grill for this year and then spend the same amount for deck lighting, patio heaters, and refrigerators for next year. It takes long before you finish your dream outdoor kitchen but you can be sure that the project will be higher in quality.

In other words, you should figure out how you can best afford a quality outdoor kitchen before getting so excited.

2. The Grill

Every modern outdoor kitchen should have a grill. Normally, a grill uses natural or propane gas. The things that make a grill different from the other are size, budget, and features. Depending on the configuration of the kitchen, you can choose a portable grill on wheels or a grill that is mounted permanently.

Also, you need to pay close attention to the following features:

a. total cooking surface

The more square inches the cooking surface has, the merrier you will be. In this case, you have enough space to grill your favorite poultry, meat, vegetables and/or fish.

b. quantity and size of size burners

If you have more and bigger side burners, you can accommodate large meals. You can also consider the presence of a rotisserie or a warming rack.

c. size of storage space

It is more advantageous if you have plenty of storage beneath your grill. Also, you have to check if your grill provides you with enough room to work around and cook. Ideally, there should be at least three feet of space on each side of the grill.

Outdoor kitchen furniture is becoming very popular these days, one important thing to remember about your furniture is that it has to be strong enough to survive the weather and the conditions outside. What Kinds Of Showers Are Available For A Small Bathroom

You have a small bathroom and you want to install a shower in it but what options are there available in order for you to achieve this.

Whilst many people enjoy having a bath and being able on the odd occasion to lay in it and have along relaxing soak most people now opt for the quicker option of having a shower. Not only are they quick and refreshing but because they use less water than a bath they are more economical.

When considering having a shower installed in such a small bathroom many people are put off before they start as they think that they do not have enough space to play with in order to get the best possible out of such a confined space.

The first thing you consider is removing the bath and replace this with a shower stall instead. However, the problem with this choice is that you won’t be able to have a bath anymore. Although this might suit the kind of life you are leading now, you will need to think about what you might need in a few years time or should you decide to move home and sell your property. A lot of people when looking to buy a home would like to have the option of being able to have either a shower or a bath, plus not having a bath could actually cause the value of your property to drop.

However an option that more and more people look at doing when they have a small bathroom is to install a shower over the bath. Not only is this a much easier option if there is no other alternative for you to add a shower but it saves a lot on remodeling costs and this is something that should be considered. You will need to replace the taps on the bath with a set that has an integral showerhead and you will also need to include a shower curtain or splashguard in order to protect the area around the bath.

Another alternative is to have a wet room installed. But this is not only difficult but is quite an ambitious solution to having a shower installed in a small bathroom. Not only will you need to carry out extensive modifications to the bathroom but in all events it is quite an expensive option to choose. The benefit of this type of shower is that it enables you to place the shower almost anywhere you want even in the smallest of bathrooms as long as you have ample space. Unfortunately the downside to this type of shower is that everything within the room will get wet whenever you take a shower and this kind of shower should be thought about seriously prior to make any decisions on choosing this option.

The final type of shower you could install is a curved quadrant shower cubicle which allows you to get even the smallest shower cubicle into a confined space and is probably one of the best options available. This type of shower cubicle can be either free standing or installed along a wall or in a corner of the room.

Even having a small shower enclosure is better than having nothing at all and by checking the available sizes of stalls available you will be able to determine which size of enclosure will suit you best. Remember you can always increase the size of the stall you install if you able to produce a design which provides you with enough space for such an option.

If you want you can look at installing very small and narrow toilets and wash hand basins in order to free up the additional space for the installation of your shower.

A great way of designing a bathroom makeover is to get some graph paper and cut out paper shapes of toilets, showers, bath etc and them moving them around the graph paper in order to find the most effective way of using the space that is available to you.

Just by taking your time and looking at what space you have available and what types of bathroom accessories you can get you should be able to redesign your bathroom space and have a shower installed as well.
